Our stores are limited to 6 hours opening on a Sunday. Tesco, probably the biggest supermarket chain, announced that they would be open one minute after midnight on Monday (today). We went at 1 minute past and found a queue round the store waiting for it to open. Our kids are away until later today and It was a spur of the moment thing for a few bits that we had forgotten. Inside the store it was bedlam. The shelf fillers were out in force because it was supposed to be a quiet time I suppose...bad move. A lot of the aisles were full of their trolleys and there was much less room for customers. I have never seen such queues at the checkout, they were tailing back round the shop. By the time we got to the till it was gone 1am and fortunately we only had a dozen items. There were people with carts piled high with toys, groceries and booze. Never again, what madness.

American crass commercialism crosses the pond? We have Black Friday (Day after Thanksgiving) and it is a very similar scene........... I agree, never again.

And furthermore:

6pm Christmas eve......I have just been across town to collect my son, there was a radio warning to stay away from supermarkets as the roads around them are gridlocked. Never heard that before. They are forecatsing a recession here, I see no recession unless everyone is trying to comit financial suicide.

Odot: Very scary....no the booze was no cheaper, but I bought some anyway hic!

Merry Christmas to all. Have a good holiday folks and ride safe next year.

Graham & Sue in the UK.
