So I picked up a used from fellow forum memeber FredandJeannesRacer. I wanted to try cutting a screen down for summer riding.

I started by making a template of the top contour of the screen and transfered it 5" lower. Since the screen is wider down there, I used a string and pen to run an arc to the edges.

I covered the screen in painters tape before attacking it with the Jig Saw.

I used a 2-3 grades of sandpaper to smooth and round the cut. Wet sanding the last few stges. Here is a comparison to a stock screen.

Next I mounted it up. Here are shots: front, rear low, rear extended.

No ride report yet, due to rain.

My motivation is to get more wind on those 90F+ days. We'll see.

Looks good. I've been thinking about the same thing.Let us know how it works.

Are you also going to tint it? Ultimately that is what I would like to do.

My plan is to tint the shorty screen; but I'm not sure how to work that out. I'm learning that these plastic screens "outgass"; which makes tint film a non-option. I've seen some screens painted with acrylic paint. The problem there is they become opaque; not really what I was after.

Some people have painted the inside of the shield to get the tint look. As long as you don't plan on looking through it, seems like it would look and work pretty good.

There's something called "Nite Shades" that is a spray-on tint. I think it lets light get through, but not sure if you could look through it.

Unless you're wicked short, or often get into a full tuck, you won't be looking thru the shield anyway. And a blacked out shield will help shade your instruments and gps screen some. I've got an extra shield here that I'm intending on hacking down soon. I think I'll just black it out with some plastic paint applied on the back side. Maybe even stencil on some sort of highly zoot FJR logo before the black. ;)

I just like to have a bike that isn't as hot and has absolutely zero front coverage for those days....

But there will never be a replacement for my FJR, just a stable mate !!!! :D

Nice job on the shorty... hope it helps your heat on those days...

Took my shorty screen to work today. What a riot! It is short enough to feel wind on my chest, which is where my jacket vents are. At highway speed there is enough pressure wave to make me rise the screen a little, but hey thats why its adjustable!

What is really cool is, how it cleans up my peripheral view especially diving into corners.

Fun modification. Now to consider my tinting options.

Warning! If you value rain protection this isn't for you.

That looks slick!

I've heard if you add some RIT die to water and boil the screen it will absorb the die color. Takes 15-30 min. depending on how much tint you want. I'm sceptical, but I do have the left over pieces, a camp stove, and an old pot. Maybe I'll test it this weekend.

I can't believe a shorty screen is'nt available through the usual companies! Maybe a market for some enterprising individuals?

Cee Baily has a -3" in light tint shown below on my bike and is my favorite unless I have a pillion or am riding beyond 200 miles/day
