Hello FJR veterans. I am in need of some advice. I clipped my right side case and broke off one of the 2 "brackets" that hang onto the bike. Everything else about the case is basically OK. It was a wooden post I hit, so no real bad scratches. My questions are: Can these be taken apart and parts swapped? If I find another case cheep which has the brackets, can I just take off the back portion and swap? Or does the painted portion of the case come off? I see a few ways I could go about this if these parts come apart. It looks like stuff is rivited on. I am not real handy with these type of things and want to get my sidecase back on in the least expensive way possible. I cant even see how the locks come off to maybe do a swap on that once I get the rest. I would hate to have to buy a new one just due to a broken bracket.

Can someone offer advice here and maybe point me in the right direction? I hope I explained this all OK.

Thanks in advance.

Can't help directly with taking the lid off, other than to say some peops have done it by drilling out the hinge rivits and re-riviting.

The lock is easy. Lift the tab as if to open it, behind you can see two screw heads. (Click image for larger view)

These need an anti-tamper screwdriver (available from your local friendly tool-store). Just undo these, it all comes to bits and you can slide the lock out. It's best to note the exact configuration before taking it apart, the same bits are used on both sides, so it can be put together incorrectly.

Many people get some standard Philips or Posidrive headed screws to replace these; if you decide to do that, you can undo the screws using pliers (been there, done that).

When putting in the screws, use some Loctite. Saves having the bags bouncing down the road behind you later.

Hi Bigdog, I had a similar situation and needed to change the painted part of the case. The best and easiest by far is to drill out the two rivets on each hinge on the outer painted side of the hinge. They come out really easily and need to be replaced with 4mm (5/32") diameter - 7mm (1/4") length (which is the grip range).

Just watch out for the metal plates as they can move easily even though they are 'double sided taped' in place by the factory (the rivets pass through the metal hinge then the plastic outer 'painted' shell then through a 1/2' x 1 1/2' approx metal plate). I held mine in place with a screwdriver while I threaded the new rivet through.

I sprayed the new rivets with black paint to match the original prior to fitting - you can't tell it's been replaced!!

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the great advice and pics!! Drilling out the hinge rivits seems the way to go, I would not have thought about that. I am truly amazed at the sheer amount of information found here.

Thanks again
