Single person tent

Greetings all.

T minus 3 weeks and I can buy an FJR. COME ON CONDO MONEY!!!!!

Anyway, I want to go touring and camping and I'd love to find a tent which fits into either the Yamaha or Givi top hardbag. Aye, it does'nt HAVE to fit in there, but I'd love it if I could use that container to keep all my camping gear. Including tent, thin roll-up floormat, and lightweight sleeping bag.

Suggestions?

Depends on what you plan to do in it (quiet out there!)- If it's just for sleeping & keeping the bugs off you, you can get a 1 person bivi tent thats about the size of a large shoe, including poles. If you may spend time in 1 location, or want to be able to change inside you can bump up to a 2 person bivi, or a dome. Sportsman Guide carries several cheap tents (starting around $20.00) as well as sleeping bags of various sizes & thickness's. Most of their stuff won't last forever, but will hold up for a few trips. If I'm camping in 1 place & taking day trips from there I usually carry a 4 person dome so I can change kinda standing up & spread a map out inside to plan the next day if the bugs/weather won't allow it outside. The poles won't fit in a Givi or Yamaha top bag, but can be strapped on underneath or along the base or "somewhere". Some of the "hiking" sleeping mats will fit inside a case, but I usually carry a full size one outside cause I like a good night's sleep

yeah... maybe I'll just get a small 2 man tent and strap it down to the pillion. I kinda like everything in boxes I guess.

about 10 years ago we were given a tent as a gift. it was by l.l. bean. i'm no backwoods guru, maybe that's the bose speakers of the camping world, i dunno, but it goes up in 5 minutes, can be easily assembled/disassembled by one person, packs up pretty nicely, and has held up quite well for 10 years. won't fit in your bags, packed up it's about the same size as one of those foldable camp chairs that fits in its carrier---about the size of 3 or 4 golf umbrellas bundled together.

I bought a sleeping bag duffle bag/cover at Fred Meyer which was big enough for the sleeping bag, pad, and 3-person tent and strapped it down to the rear seat. Worked great for my 9 day trip to utah and back.

Ahh ok. Thought so. I just ordered there Analog GPS and trying to figgure out how to mount it.

Back on topic: Big 5 has 2 man dome tents for about $20. Your local sporting goods stores should have something simmilar. I'm to cheap to spend $100+ for a tent or sleeping mat :blink:

Well, I thought about those small tents for a trip to Daytona earier this year, yes they would pack in one of the bags, however...

I just could not see crawling in and out of it, I picked this one up at SAMS on the way down there and then sold it to another camper to avoid bringing it back.

It was nicely packed in a small rectangular canvas bag and now I wish i would have just kept it....

Then you have the sleeping bag!!!! The one I got packed in the E52 case while riding, I got it at SAMS as well, it packs into a small kind of square canvas bag. I did not get a cushion to put under the sleeping bag, you'll want one!!!!!!

A sleeping on the hard ground just doesn't agree with me now....

Thie is the size tent that I went with, it was perfect to store all of my gear in, just left side cases top case and everytihng in it while out enjoying the riding around Daytona...

people at the motorcycle camp grounds are the nicest folks, all kinds of tents etc...

I have a two man person tent that fits into the side bag. The trick is finding one with poles that come in short enough sections. Mine is the Eureka APex 2XT:

The poles on mine are aluminum. I've seen the exact same tent at DicK's Sports, only it's branded for Dick's, and it's green.

It's got a lot of mesh, so it doesn't bake you, but with the right bag, it's plenty warm for three seasons. There are Apex tents with fiberglass poles, and with longer aluminum poles (resulting in longer pack dimensions), so make sure you get the right one. You'll be able to tell right away when you see the box if it'll fit in your side bag.

Not to imply that BMW guys are any judges of quality, but... Last spring I went camping with at the BMWMOCM Hiawatha Rally, and there were more tents like mine than any other type. I suppose the owners of those tents will be looking to buy FJRs soon.

REI sells nice stuff too. I've got their 6 man person Geodome. I didn't find anything of theirs that packed down small enough.

OK, I've been camping my whole life, so I have some experience here.

No matter the tent, divide the number of persons it says it will sleep by 2. A 1 man tent is very tight, claustrophobic, and will leave no room for any gear whatsoever. In short, you'll hate it.

4 man tents are good for more than 1 night. You can put an air matress in, a gear bag or two, your weapon, and sleeping gear with enough room to put on clothes and fiddle around in your gear bags. 2 man tents are OK for occasional use by 1 person (ie non-serious camper).

I've had pretty good luck with Eureka tents. Not the best, but for under $100 they are hard to beat and are commonly available at Dicks, Gander Mountain, or your local sporting goods store. Mine is about 6 years old, I use it twice a year for 5 nights each stay on wooded terrain and it's holding up nicely (no tears, zipper works well, no leaks, etc) . I usually strap a tarp over it in case of heavy storms.

Also, NEVER store food in there. It's an invitation for wildlife to plummit you in your sleep. Store food in your hard bags, outside cooler, or hanging in a tree!!!

+1 on the Eureka Apex tent. I have a fiberglass pole version, with the short poles. Fits in the side bag easy, along with my summer sleeping bag!

What I found when looking was that the older versions had the short poles. You may want to find a larger distributor and see if you can score the short pole section verion in either aluminum or fiberglass. Aluminum pole versions are a bit more money. I haven't had any problems with the fiber poles and have used it a lot. bonus - this tent is pretty easy to set up at night in the dark. My first time setting it up was the day after I bought it, in the dark. The second day was in Prince Rupert, BC, again in the dark. Crap, maybe I need to make camp earlier? :glare:

Ditto on the 2 man equalling a one man tent. Unless you're one skinny dude and your honey is pixie sized. Room for your tank bag and riding gear though, which is nice. Kept me dry during some pretty good rain storms.
