slider torque 06

after reading pegs problem with sliders i noticed a lot of confusion with torque numbers for 06 sliders my shop manual shows 35 has anybody checked with their dealer or know for sure the value-it also appears perhaps the aussie shop manual shows different numbers-the part about needing a new motor because of stripped threads sure caught my attention although i would think a helicoil would repair the threads-anyway i have moto on mine and want to have the torque right-the factory bolts were real loose just snug which i thought was odd as i assumed they torqued critical bolts

I had no problem with the US-Manual torque number (35ft/lbs) on my '06 FJR. I removed and reinstalled the sliders twice, with no sign of damage. However, I did not use any kind of lube or locktite on the bolts. Make sure you have a good (calibrated) torque wrench.

stretch is saying:

05 FJR engine bolt torque is 55nm or 41 ft/lbs

06 FJR engine bolt torque is 40nm or 29 ft/lbs

I better see what the Yamy shop has to say. :dntknw:

The yamy shop dude just called me back, stating that for the '06 & '07 it is 35 ft/lbs for the motor/slider torque.

I installed skyway sliders tonight, the factory bolts were very loose, maybe 15lbs. The skyway directions say left first at 35lbs. and then right at 35lbs. The left went on as expected, the right side scared the hell out of me because on the second tightening from 20lbs. up to the 35lbs. it almost felt like the threads were slipping/stripping?!

Be careful I think!

Folks - take it easy with the torque wrench on this fastener. I have installed many sets for owners and almost every engine bolt I removed was well below the factory recommended torque. In fact I would just tighten them up until the bolt feels nice and snug and then stop.

Don't keep hammering down on the torque wrench waiting for the click if it doesn't feel right, do this and your just asking for trouble. Common sense and taking it easy are what is needed here.

Exactly the same thing happened here on the right side. I stopped at 24lbs

Ian, should I have used stock washer at all?

Skyway - My ridding buddy suggested that the additional 3/4 turn I felt on the right side slider bolt may be from a frame designed to be 1/8" wider than the motor for installation purposes and that by tightening the left side first (per the mechanics manual and your instuctions) that I was simply feeling the additional 1/8" gap being closed during installation? I'm not sure that holds water, but it kind of makes since!

I just received and installed the Skyway liders last night. The enclosed directions said 29 lbs. I torqued to 29 and the right side gave me the chills. I was sure this was going to strip. Wrench clicked just when my nerve ran out.

If you feel that 29 ft/lbs is too much, then stop before you get there. I backed off the torque recommendations as I feel that 35 ft/lbs is a little heavy for a fine pitch thread. Maybe I should drop it down a little further?

I am with Skyway on this, better to be under than strip the thread.

I did mine up to 29ft/lb, they torqued up smooth @ 29 but if I tried to go to 35ft/lb, it felt notchy.

Before I removed my engine bolts I tried to get a torque figure off them, I reached 23ft/lb before the torque wrench snapped, that would be close as little effort is required to undo the originals.

How do you check the calibration on a torque wrench and if it is off can it be set.

I have used a torque wrench all my life but I have never had one calibrated. I think that it is about time I learn how.
