Really guys? It's a good thing that Z has enough class to put up with your lack of it.
And speaking of our little buddy "Bruce" in this story, it has been my privilege to have a number of Bruces in my class through the years. Just the other day, one of them made the headlines here in New Port Richy, FL. (sad story of brutal murder and attempted suicide here
CLICKY). This particular Bruce (named Jason) was one of the students that floundered his way through our reading department perhaps 9 years ago. My good friend Jeff, a colleague of mine, was his teacher. He shared the sad news with me just this week.
Needless to say, we can't reach them all and we can't fix them all.
However, I'm reminded that if teachers do their job well, a number of these kids can indeed be turned around. I interact with kids like this every day. Sometimes they break your heart, sometimes they don't want to talk about how much life hurts. But many times, we are able to make a difference. We keep careful records of what they say and do, we compare notes often, we meet with parents and work at getting them the help they need to get back on track. And thanks to the hard work of some wonderful colleagues, I've seen with my own eyes the transformation of many of these kids.
The problem is, many Bruces don't get jobs at hospitals: they don't get jobs at all. They end up populating our jails instead. I understand that people laugh and joke about the Bruces of the world. But I know that every day that I do my job well, maybe, just maybe, officers like Zilla will have one less Bruce to deal with in the future.
