Is there a standardized wiring/switching setup that everyone is planning on using? I've seen Dale's **** box... is that how most people are going to go?
Here's how mine are wired Groo. Explanation courtesy of Warchild. I am using a SPDT heavy duty switch. This setup gives me the option to run only the stock high beams with the stock switch, solteks + stock high beams with stock high beam switch, and Soltek always on regardless of stock switch position. 3 positions total. This works out good when in the near vicinity of mass amounts of cagers.

* Stock switch refers to the high beam switch on the left handlebar.

I will assume you have a 4-terminal relay to power the Solteks, rated at 25-amps or better

Where is says "PIAA relay" above, you will connecting that wire to the positive input of the relay powering the Solteks... say terminal #86.

Therefore, terminal #85 of this relay is connected to ground (-).

Terminal #30 is connected to the heavy-duty 12-gauge wire that is INCOMING power (+) to the relay. This incoming wire is fused by a 25-amp fuse (though truthfully, you can get away using a 20-amp fuse just fine).

Terminal 87 is therefore your OUTGOING positive wire (+) that connects directly to *both* red wires on the Solteks.

Regarding your SPDT switch:

The top pole is connected to any *switched* (+) power source. Thus, there is power at this pole only when the ignition is on.

That bottom pole, I am guessing you want to connect to the one of the high-beam lights (positive (+) wire, of course).

WHEN WIRED AS I'VE DESCRIBED, the effect is as follows:

1) When toggle switch is thrown "upward", the Solteks come on **regardless** of the status of the high-beam or low-beam. Doesn't matter which (hi or low) is lit up at the time.

2) When the toggle switch is left in the center, the Solteks do nothing. They remain unlit at all times.

3) When the toggle is thrown downward, the Solteks light up only when the stock high-beam switch is engaged. They extinguish when the stock headlight switch is thrown back to its low beam setting.

 
When do you run lights this bright and how often do people get pissed or.... can you aim them so as not to bling the people driving straight at you.
I've been mulling this over for a while. And I suppose i should have voiced this on day one of the mount design, but;

Is there any way to have a solenoid attached to the light so it tilts down out of oncoming traffic instead of turning it off? I thought i read that on and off and on was kinda hard on a HID bulb, tilting down might make for a well lit front tire, but give you a longer bulb life.

If I'm off base with the power cycling being bad, I'd be glad to hear about it.

At this rate, I wonder what the next teir for savings are? .>30 seems easily abtainable, So maybe 50 or 75 might yield another $100 off? Either way, Count me in! :yahoo:

All I could think of would be future expansion, other possible farkles, or does warchild have other lights powered through the switch requiring a DPDT switch?

I'm leaning towards a SPST waterproof toggle switch.

I was kinda hoping that, or maybe Randy would come up with a complete system, like for the upgraded horns.... for the electrically challenged of us. (although i must say... i never would have envisioned that I could have added the electrical stuff I currently have on the bike back a few years ago...)

Guys, the brackets are the same for all model years. That's why the FZ-1 mirror farkle will work regardless of which year/Generation FJR you have.

Different bikes (Kawi-KLRs, Suzki DRs & DLs aka: V-Stroms, a BMW GS or Ducati MultiStrada or Triumph Tiger, Honda STs, etc.) are going to require Ian to design a bracket for them.

The diagram showing the DPDT switch is only for illustration purposes. You will be using a SPDT switch for this setup.

In regards to the switch, I just picked up a heavy duty SPDT switch from my local hardware store for around $5, then added a little rubber cover thingy to keep the water out. It is mounted on panel A of my bike.

Hi Adam, the pricing moves in $20 incriments based on quantities of 10. So 31-40 yeilds us the target price of the GB, 41-50 will reduce the price by another $20. I don't have any other pricing over the 50 pair amount, but I can check into it if we get that far.

If you follow Warchilds excellent description above, it will be a piece of cake. Just make sure you use good quality connectors and get a hold of a couple of spools of the correct gauge wire.

Or, if you're like Kaitsdad, just prewire the whole installation months in advance, and label the wires Soltek. :lol:

Not positive on the switch, I was searching for waterproof switches today.

Most of the waterproof switches I found were mainly marine products, all seemed too large for this application plus they were designed to be mounted in a flat panel.

I am leaning towards just what you described, a small three way toggle switch with a waterproof rubber boot.

Then I was thinking about how I would waterproof the other side and I kept thinking about your audiovox cc mount.

Maybe if I mounted the toggle switch in a similar mount (but with a removable rear panel), added a nice laser-engraved label plate that said OFF-SUN (or whatever), then sealed up the back somehow leading to the lights/relay all would be great.

As for the location I really haven't thought that one through completely.

I have your CC mount on the throttle side.

Maybe a small enclosure for the toggle switch that screws to the clutch reservoir mounting screws?

Just kicking the idea around, if you do design something I know it will be great.

I'm sure my description sounds/looks better in my head than I can write out in an email.

I will be shipping my FJR back to the states in mid August and I won't see it until after Thanksgiving so this whole light project will be a winter project for me anyway.

How about a 3 switch box that mounted to the top of the brake/clutch master cylinder?
