I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on his tombstone
From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of his birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That he spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved him
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard;
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

As I get older my life is spent going a little slower, as I am no longer in a dash to reach the end of this trip.

Thanks for the thought.

Best regards

Surly

I went to a workshop yesterday about Living Will's and Durable Power of Attorney's.

The woman that lives in this house said, "If your going to keep riding that bike we need to do some stuff."

You know damn well that I'm am so ...

Still living the dash, just not quite as fast.

SoCal, that was a good little reminder.

PS: Everyone should be doing the Living Will and Durable Power. Daughter's didn't want to hear it but it had to be done.

Thanks for the reminder.

I have a framed version of that poem on a wall, attributed to it's author Linda Ellis.

It would make a good FJR tank decal - back off and smell the coffee. Not!!

Al.

So true! I'm sooo glad I had my parents sign those before their Alzheimers got too bad because it makes it MUCH easier to manage their affairs. But for some reason I can't quite see signing power of attorney over to my son who is 19. Scary thought having him in charge.

My Grandfather's eulogy was very similar to this poem.

When we are young, We cannot wait to get old... Now, I can see it and wish time would slow down a bit.

When I talk to people about one of my adventures I often get 'that must have been the ride of a lifetime' or 'once in a lifetime' type of comments. It always gives me pause because I never think of anything as once in a lifetime. I like to think that I can go do it again if I want to, and sometimes I do. When the end comes I want it to be a surprise, not a plan.

My personal philosophy is that the meaning of life is the pursuit of happiness. I believe that every one of us lives to maximize our own happiness. Some find that happiness in helping others, some less so, but it's always about what we each believe will maximize our happiness.

It's good to be Happy, it rubs off on people, and it's healthy for you.

Try to let the punches roll off you, also there are studies that suggest Happy people live longer and have less diseases, when you're sad it lowers your Immune system and stresses you out.

At work, the patients are always happy that I'm always laughing. It's my belief that if I quit laughing, then I'll start crying.

What's the title of that book...... "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff, and believe me, It's ALL Small Stuff"............ yep, make your will, Powers of Attorney, and live the life you want to live.
