I'm considering buying one of these to replace my DVD Recorder/player that is beginning to malfunction.

A salesperson actually turned me away from a Sony BlueRay cause it wouldn't play EVERYTHING!

A question to you learned folks though - one I've been unable to get answered so far.

Will the PS3 play DVD+R and DVD+R/W ? How many type discs will it play anyway?

My appreciation for any responses.

Our video store (independent) says that there are some Blu-Ray discs that take up to 15 minutes to "load" before being able to play on a PS3.

That 15 minutes is probably due to a firmware update that the DVD has but the PS3 does not. If you update the firmware of the PS3 yourself on a regular basis I doubt you will see that 15 minute wait to play a dvd. I know I haven't

I play home burned DVD-R's on my PS3 all the time and they look fabulous! Note - In order to take advantage of the HD you will need to buy a HDMI cable (any one will do) separatly. The PS3 does not come with it. Make sure your TV functions at 1080p to take full advantage of blue ray movies. I bought my TV back in 2005 and only goes up to 1080i :angry2: so blueray discs look just the same as my burned dvds. The PS3 will automatically upscale your regular dvd to 1080i if you use the HDMI cable.

The only shortcoming I find on the PS3 is that to play a movie you need to use the joystick, you cannot program a universal remote b/c the PS3 only works with bluetooth (unless you buy the Sony Universal remote for the PS3.)

Sony is losing tons of money so I'll bet there will be another price drop before summer if you can wait that long. Last price drop (down to $399) was November 2007.

What I hear from the pundits is that, until home players break the sub-$200 price range, the PS3 is the player of choice. You get one of the better-interfaced players on the market and a gaming console is thrown in for free (good thing too since - unless you're a sports game player - the number of titles that are amazing are pretty limited compared to the XBox).

I paid $179 for my Sylvania Blu-Ray at Costco. Does that mean the pundits are right? Oh, and it's obvious I only paid $179, it is relatively featureless. But it plays Blu-Ray, and upscales regular DVDs.

Never had a problem playing anything on my PS3, and I've had it since release, plus I rent tons of movies from netflix (blue-ray and dvd).

Best thing about PS3, (get the one with a wifi card in it) is that it functions as a DNLA media server. Just download windows media player 11. Put your music files in "My Documents/My music." Add it to your library, and enable media server. Now you can play any song on your computer over the network. You can do the same with pictures, and video's (although I haven't tried the latter).
