R.I.P. Our FJR Riding Friend
Sherri and I hooked up with some of our country's finest that are serving us while members of our United States Coast Guard. I was honored to ride with them and Joel lead the ride on his V Strom. I stole his handguards. Just kidding.
How many different terrains and landscapes can be packed into a small area? I would have to say that California has the ability to pack in all sorts of different environments within a single day's idle ride. We went from an island dedicated to the Coast Guard's use in the middle of one of the biggest and busiest bays in the world, through the downtown centers of Oakland and San Francisco, through the hills between San Francisco and the coastline to the incredible vistas from famous California Highway 1 to riding through a low mountain range packed with dense forrests full of a varying assortment of Ucalyptus (sp?) Elm, Coastal Pine, Magnolia, Redwood and then back to a beach with surrouding flora more reminiscent of an arid region. All of this took place in a loop of a little over 100 miles.
North on I-880 to I-80 W over the bay bridge. After the bridge we branched off on I-280 to meet up with US 1 at the Pacifica exit. Once we got nearer the coast, the low lying clouds were prevalent and the warm sun was no where to be found. We traveled HWY 1 to Half Moon Bay and had breakfast at the Main Street Grill with the singing chef. It's a small little diner/cafe and it was pretty busy so we ended up sitting and eating at the counter.
After breakfast we went back up to rt 92 and headed east for 5 miles and got on rt 35 (Skyline blvd) heading south. Traffic was moderate (moderately slow) but that sure is a cool road! We stopped in the trading post parking lot across from Alice's Restaurant for a quick rest and to take some pictures. Leaving there, we continued on 35 until we met up with rt 9 heading south towards Boulder Creek.
We split from the group that headed back via Bear Creek Rad and 17. After we split up, we took 236 from Boulder Creek. It looped North to 9 and then we retraced our steps down 9 to Boulder Creek again and then on to Santa Cruz where we picked up 1 North.
The route:
