Tommy Hill is a Brit favourite, and has climbed through the ranks of British racing. He won the Virgin R6 cup and with that came a works Yamaha ride in the British Superbike championship. He did 2 years in this and did a couple of wild card rides at world level with a pole position and couple of podiums on a supersports bike. He moved up to world supersports this year with an Italian team.

During his first test for the team in December there was a problem with the auto-shifter. They eventually switched it off completely, they then said they had found what the problem was and switched it back on. It jumped down a gear half way through a fast curve and spat Tommy off. His injuries are huge and he is likely to be in a wheelchair for 6 months. He has never broken a bone before and in this one crash has:

Had to have his spleen and a kidney removed

Ripped 2 ribs away from his sternum

Had to have stitches to repair damage done by a zip

Broke a wrist

Broken femur just below the hip

Broken ankle

The kid had just arrived at world level, and everyone was quietly hoping for a top result.

I wonder how quickly the engineers and mechanics would be to decide something is "fixed" if it were THEIR skin and bones that would take the punishment? Technology! This sure keeps "Hoppers" trials with Suzuki in perspective.

Here's hoping for a complete and speedy recovery.

Tommy made his return to racing today in the world supersports. He was taken out in the first bend by a wild card rider who tried to pass half a dozen riders down the inside. He caused a huge pile up which in turn caused the race to be stopped.

Tommy has re-broken the same femur.

Dang, that's bad news. Nearly mended and able to come back to racing to be taken out by THIS type of preventable idiocy!?!?!?

It does make you wonder what though processes some riders use.

Video of the full race & Tommy's come back crash is HERE. Look under video's, the supersport is the 4th one down. The race start is 14 minutes in.
