In case you all may have not heard of them, Med-Flash is a new item I happened upon in the back of a Motorcyclist magazine. I contacted them about possibly donating 1 for the 2008 EOM, and got a fantastic response from the President and SR Marketing type guy.

I haven't gotten to FULLY converse with the man, but it appears that he is willing to make an offer to those of us here on the forum. The units normally go for $65 for the USB and I believe $75 for the Credit Card style, but he is going to offer them for $35/$45.

What these are is basically a USB Flash Drive that holds any and all pertinent medical information that can be easily plugged into any USB port of any computer. You also can have x-rays and other items on there that will pop up when inserted. In case you ever have a crash while out on your own and unconscious, this will be easier than trying to track down a little piece of paper with all of your info.

Like I said, I don't have the FULL details, but wanted to post this up for any who might be interested. I am going to try to contact him either tonite or tomorrow for the full details.

Ok. So I was wrong on the initial prices. They are $50/$65 for keychain/credit card style respectivley. Our pricing will be $35/$45. He sent me some pics of the article as well as actual screen shots. If I can figure it out, I'll try to post them up, or I can email you the documents. I will be calling him tomorrow to get everything together. If there are any other ?'s let me know.

Interesting idea, one thing that concerns me is if you lose it someone ends up with all of your information.

Potential Answer: Encrypt and password protect it. If you can't tell someone the password or forget it, again it's useless.

Not trying to ruin your idea, just a concern. They don't seem to address that on their site which surprises me with all of the HIPAA regulations.

Just my $.02...

That is something I didn't think of. I DO know that the keychain style you can also wear as a pendant on a chain. That is prolly how I would wear it. But I will ask them when I call them today.

The best I can tell there is the software on the flash that causes the info to pop up as soon as the flash is inserted.

Someone here on the forum could create a little program to do the same thing. However, for me it is about how easy it is. I could create a small program and paint a flash red with the medical symbol, or pay $35. I will just pay the $35.

I never ride a bike with out my jacket. So, I talked with Wayne at Cycleport some time back and he is going to create a red pocket on my left shoulder with the following written in white "medical information enclosed" along with the medical symbol. I am going to put the flash in the pocket, along with a paper copy and contact information if I ever go down. I figure if the medical personnel don't find it my arm must be missing. Now, I just need to get off my butt and go see Wayne and get fitted for a new set of gear.

Like I said, this is just something I found and thought a few people might be interested in it. Please feel free to look at thier site and decide for yourself if it might be something you'd like. I have NO affiliations with them either, just FYI.

I don't remember who posted it, but I I got a reponse from the Marketing Guy with a reply about the personal info, so they are watching the posts:

HIPPA does not apply to MedFlash - MedFlash is a personnel device

Use common sense – no social security numbers

who cares who your MD or insurance company is or that your on Plavix

Just thought this might be of interest to some of you.

**Edit**

I just got off the phone with Bernard from MedFlash. Extremely personable fellow! Here are some of the things he and I discussed:

1. The Med-Flash is more like a high-tech Medical ID Bracelet.

2. You can also choose your own Flash drive, send it to them, and they will put all the program info on it for you. I believe he said this would cost in the $25-$35 range.

3. If you register your purchased Med-Flash, whenever program updates become available, you will recieve them for free.

Please, if any of you that read this have any detailed questions about the item, contact him. I don't know if I should post up his number, but if you are intrested, PM me and I'll shoot it your way. Again, I have NO connection to this company. They are a fledgling business and this product just happens to be something I think could be very beneficial to the motorcyclist community.

He is sending a unit my way and as soon as I get it, I will test it out and do a small review of it for those intrested.

I DO like the idea of a dedicated medical info pocket on jackets...I might have to look into that myself!

I can see how some people would find this very helpful, especially if they have a unique medical conditions. I keep a bunch of medical info on a laminated card in my wallet. Nothing that would cause concern if I lost it. Just the basics like blood type, allergies, and emergency points of contact. If this kind of information is put on a flash drive, there would not be a need to encrypt the info.

Both are very good ideas. Most of the time we are concerned about you ,not the bike if it's too far off. That's why the keychain placement wouldn't be a highly advisable area. We have computers in our system, but some don't. Keep that in mind as well. It would be nice if you had meds, allergies and med problems w/ your b-day on a sheet of paper though. Sometimes that info is critical, and the Paramedics may not have the ability or equipment to use such a device. Just my .02.

It would probably be very welcome in the hospital, where they have all the gear and someone to run it.

Did you get the MedFlash I sent you? Give me a call 1-800-526-8006 ext 114 Bernard

Yes. I received it right after xmas. haven't had the time to fiddle with it yet. I'll dabble around with it and put up a review for it in the review section
