I just picked up the SpeedoHealers last week. Most of you have '05 or older bikes and won't need them. However, I know for a fact that the '06 speedometers/odometers are off. My bike is telling me I'm doing 85 mph when I'm actually only doing 73 mph. And that also means it is stacking up miles on the odo to fast. FOR ALL OF YOU WHO ARE HAVING THE GUAGE CLUSTER REPLACED BECASUE OF THE BAD FUEL MILAGE INDICATOR, the speedohealer can be used to put your milage back on the new odometer! It has a built in test mode that will allow you to run your speedo up like you were moving, the odo counts off while this is happeing. This is how I plan to put my milage back on.

I only have a couple of units in stock right now for the '06 FJR (Universal unit), so first come first serve. If I run out of them, it will take approximately 4 days before I would have more.

Maybe I missed this but this is the first I have heard of the speedo being off <_<
No, Metric is correct.

IIRC, it was Chuck Hickey (chickey191) who first brought it to our attention. It's the 2006 models that now have the optomistic speedometer typical of most Japanese bikes, tending to read 5%-8% high, thereabouts.

The 2003-2005 model year FJRs, OTOH, have an unusually accurate speedometer... mine reads a fairly consistant 1.5 mph high across most of the speedometer range between 25mph-80mph

interestingly - new PR's on the bike yesterda and calibration run done this morning. Same size tires as the stones, but that can be misleading and perhaps it was because I have the new speedo cluster installed, also.

As it turns out - either the new speedo and new tires are pretty much exactly the same as the old stones and speedo/odo - or they were off sufficiently to off-set each other. I'm still reading about 4.5% high on the speedo than on the gps or the cyclometer (which are pretty damned close to each other.

My 06 is a little off, but nothing like what you indicated. At 85 indicated I am actually going about 82 per the GPS, so not too bad. For me not worth trying to make any correction -- I can do that in my mind (well, most of the time).

I put a Yellow Box on my bike, which is real similar to the Speedo Healer. I had to cut one wire to the ECU to install it. I set it at a 4.5% correction factor, which seems to be working well.

I posted some info on the speedo error as well as the tach readings at various speeds here:

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=7743

I also have some installation info here:

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=8167

I am not sure if the Speedo Healer folks were able to come up with a plug and play solution or not, but I couldn't figure out any way to do it without cutting the speedo wire to the ECU.

Fred,

If you don't mind, what was the cost for the Yellow Box? They seem to be a bit higher then the SpeedoHealers.

And no, you can't just plug and play the SH either. It requires hard wiring for the '06 FJR. '05 and earlier where plug and play, but they don't seem to need it. Not Fair!! :glare:

I will be installing a SH on my bike before long. I'll put together a how to for it also. I've never posted anything like that on here before, so I may need some assistance in getting that done properly. I know I have post the pictures somewhere else and then link to them, but I haven't done any of that yet.

Warchild,

I've seen some nice 'Technical Bulletin' style how-to posts on here before. Can anyone put one of those together? And if so how do I get it done? My guess is that a good how-to would work for either the YB or the SH, could be helpful.

I already have a "How To" photo gallery on-line for installing the Yellow Box. I suspect the Speedo Healer install would be about the same. https://www.pbase.com/fredharmon/yellowboxfjr

I believe the Yellow Box is $100, and it is shipped from Australia (typically takes about 10-14 days). I also have one on the Wing, and have been using it for about 100K miles now. It is a good solid reliable unit and I have no complaints with it. It has a 10 year warranty.

I have spoken to the Speedo Healer folks about the 06 install, and they seem like good folks to deal with. I would expect that the quality of their unit is as good as the Yellow Box. About the only thing that can fail on either of these units is the dip switches. I cover mine with a small strip of electrical tape once I get them set to keep any moisture and dust/dirt out of them.

So did the $100 include shipping?!

The SH now has a feature the yellow box doesn't (at least not that I'm aware of). They added a nice button to mount on your handlebar or someplace easily accessable that allows you to recall your top speed. So far, those are the only ones I'm selling.

I'm surprised at Metric's speedometer error. My AE is off 2.5 mph at 80, according to my GPS. I thought it was crappy compared to my '04, but not as crappy as Metrics. My AE didn't have the instant gas mileage problem, so I wonder if all later '06's are going to have better speedo accuracy?

We'll soon see if there is a difference. I have a new guage cluster on order. My thoughts are that the display isn't were the problem is, but I would be happy to be wrong. I had an FZ6 that had a decent amount of speedo error also. Most of the FZ6's do have, but the actual amount of error is different from bike to bike. I expect that the '06 FJR's are now going to fall into this category.

I would agree. For the record, my FJRA model has about a 4.5 percent error and I have not gotten the 17mpg problem fixed (yet).

I just installed a Speedohealer last week (thanks for the wiring info Fred). Mine has the reset/top speed button on the unit, rather than at the end of a cable.
Note that pressing the button makes the odometer roll 2 seconds at whatever top speed you've done - in my case in excess of 230 kph - it works. I'm just as happy to leave the button under the seat, moulded into the unit.

My error factor was 5.3%.

Damn! Shouldn't Yammie fix this? :angry2: This is a warranty issue folks.

I have a 06A just bought last wed, but haven't tested speedo Vs GPS, etc.

No, Yamaha doesn't have to fix the speedo. The law requires that they be accurate, or optimistic. Not sure HOW optimistic the law allows, but 5% isn't likely beyond that limit.

Honda had a problem about 2 years ago where they were pessimistic (ST1300 and Goldwing) - there was a recall to reflash the controllers and the problem 'went away'.

Note that the speedo is a bit temperature sensitive - when cooler it seems to read a bit lower than when hot (about 1% difference from what I can tell), so keep that in mind when setting the ratio.

Well I understand the rationale for the Mfg to cover their ***, but my point is that they should do better than what the idiotic laws dictate. I don't want to be doing % calcs at 100mph! (I am good in math, but I would rather ride) I need to think what I tell the cop who stops me :clapping: What my speed? It was just a tad under 55 mph. Ignore the speedo - there is a recall! :yahoo:
