Speedometer accuracy

Even on the Sigma, all you'd have to do is take it off the bike for a bit and then when you put it back, it might say you've gone 5000 miles, when in reality you've gone 10,000 miles, and then you'd, um, wait... uh.... never mind.

I had always believed that the GPS was more accurate w/respect to MPH than your speedo. The GPS always showed my actual speed at about 5 mph slower than what was showing on the speedo, that holds true for my feejer and my previous cruiser. Interstate speed I usually maintain 80 on the speedo and about 75-76 showing on the GPS. I don't have a GPS, but a couple of my buds have them and we have never had any LEO problems. So, what gives? is my assumption wrong? how much is one of these farkle Sigma doo hicky's
I'll throw another wrinkle into this.....

The odometer portion of the bike is.....I think....different than the speedometer portion. They can be differently inaccurate.

Rallies are most interested in the odometer part and have you run over a known section of road to calibrate.

On the speedomter side my experience is that if I show 72 on the bike speedo--I'm going 70 on a GPS. They could also be inaccurate non-linearly (I'm going to vocabularly pergatory for that one)--meaning at 144 mine not really be 140. It might be 138.

BC1600's are in the $20 to $30 range. I see one on Amazon for $18.74. Sigmas are good because of the hall effect sensor and are supposedly good to 186 mph. Personally, I think that's true to the 150 range comparing with GPS.

Be aware some other brands built for bicycles that don't work in the upper speeds we take for granted on FJRs.

....ooooh! Edit. I see a new model out BC 1606L. It comes with an LCD backlight! They're about $32. Hmmmm. Anybody want to buy a used BC1600 with 24 thous....I mean 4 miles on it (I can reset it you see)?

Just got back from local REI and found this on the shelf. It's a BC1606L and is seriously the **** if you want to go with a Sigma.

FJRReady, you still have the receipt for you BC1600? If so, I highly suggest you take that sucker back and get a BC1606L instead. It has three major features you'll want.

1) It's backlit. Press the lower left (it has 4 buttons) and it lights up cool blue. It may use batteries a bit more, but it is cool at night.

2) You can make the major adjustments with the 4 buttons instead of having to press those really dorky microscopic buttons on the back.

3) There's a countdown timer. Kinda minor, but I get to do away with a Pyrex timer I was using.

4) I said there was only 3 things, well there's a bonus. The head unit plugs into the same base as the 1600. So, if you already cut wires you can do a little switcho-chango with the box contents.

This sucker seems like it was purpose built for the FJR wanting to cruise miles.

$32. And, I happened to have an REI rebate I hadn't used and walked out paying four bucks cash!
