Oh, and don't forget to turn the handgrip shifter back 'on' after gassing up. Nothing more embarrassing that ripping away from the pump and shifting from 1st....to 1st! The AE men know what I mean.
One of the first things I did with my 07 AE was to rig it so that the hand shift turns on automatically every time I start the engine. I've seen what you're referring to, but I've never experienced it. About a second after the engine starts, the green light turns on to let me know that the hand shift is enabled.
I just gor an 08 AE and have already made this mistake. Had to use the foot shifter to get on down the road.

I'm searching this forum to see how to get the bike into neutral if I can't start the engine. Do you know the procedure?

Thanks - Bill

I did find this and will try it later today-

"Parking the motorcycle: The motorcycle can either be parked in neutral or in any gear. If the main switch is turned off when the motorcycle is in gear the clutch will engage itself 3 seconds after the main switch is turned off and the motorcycle cannot be pushed in gear. To move the motorcycle after this occurs, you must turn on the main switch, have the start/stop switch in the run position and then apply the front brake. At that time the clutch will disengage itself and you can push the motorcycle."

If that does work, the problem would still exist with a discharged battery?

FYI, Push the lever that's a couple of inches forward of the left side panel. (the panel with a FJR on it). It's the lever with the rubber cap on it. That'll get you in neutral without power. Learned that the hard way a while back. :)

Ya, manually moving the shift rod works! If the transmission was left in a higher gear it may be necessary to rock the motorcycle back and forth to get the shift rod to move or pick up a lower gear.

Thank you both, those were really quick responses. My son's father-in-law mentioned he and a friend also learned the hard way - on the side of the road. He cautioned me to look in the owners manual that comes with the bike, but I could not locate it.

Thanks so much

Owners manuals in PDF can be viewed / downloaded directly from Yamaha. Easy to print the pages you need and take them with you!

Have fun!

Got it-Page 22.

Thanks so much

Another question - to run a cable from the accessory 12V outlet to a GPS or phone charger, do folks notch the plastic cover?

Nah. The charger cable is small enough you can just squish it the lid. A lot of guys who have used that power have run the cable out of the bottom of the glove box the up to the device. It just looks a little better, that's all.

I split the glove box drain grommet and ran my GPS power cord out there. It the GPS is a permanent installation it keeps the wiring nice and tidy!

Thank you both. I squished the cable on an earlier bike, maybe a GL1800, and I notched the box a little so the lid didn't deflect when closed.

I think I'll locate the drain grommet and run the cable through there.

Mine was amazing in the canyons.

Beyond that, the one thing no one will tell you is that it takes more mental effort to shift smoothly and use around town than a standard clutch, for me anyway.

It's also a little disturbing knowing you can't move with bike if it malfunctions, bump start it, or even move it around without the ignition on.

Bump starting is out but, you can put it in neutral without power very easily. :)
