Ray, I'm assuming your using the SENA 20S. The volume for the intercom is the same dial control you use for the music. However, they both have to be set independently. I.E. , rotate the control for setting your music level and then while listening to some one talk on the intercom, rotate the same dial to set that level. Now music and intercom should both be set to the levels you want.
I think I tried that but don't remember if it was this set or the ones that went back for warranty.

Does it maintain the setting or do you have to screw with it each time you turn it on like the music sharing???

Supposedly it will remember various volume levels. Supposedly. I don't believe it myself, yet.

I'm not really sure either. I fiddle with it every time just because. However, it might remember the settings but I'd say try it and see how it goes.

There are also settings in the setup that can affect volume. Plug your Sena into your computer and start the setup app.

1. Audio overlay sensitivity: adjusts the music, etc, volume level for times when you're chatting on the intercom and music's playing in the background. (Only applicable if you have Audio Multitasking turned on.)

2. Nav app support: Keeps the GPS instructions loud if you're intercom-ing when Miss Garmin wants to say something.

3. Audio Boost: Boosts the audio somehow if you need the audio turned up louder. (Turn on by tapping phone button. Turn off by tapping jog dial.)

4.Smart volume control: Adjusts volume louder based on ambient noise.

I re-learned a few things while writing this post. It pays to review the User's Manual every few months.

Went for a ride today and it is better and seems to hold the setting. I doesn't work anywhere near as well as the J&M corded set up I had on my first wing but it will have to do cause I'm not spending money on anything other than gas, tires and a occasional oil change.

Remember that if the volume on your source player is not maxed, you wil have limited adjustability in the Sena. Max your phone, MP3 player, GPS, whatever, for music. Ten adjust your comfortable volume with the Sena.

With my SMH10 and Zumo660, the GPS music volume is at 100% and navigation is at 30%. Bluetooth navigation is very loud out of my Zumo anyway, so the 30% mark keeps it about in line with the music.

I should clarify the music sharing works well. Adjusting the intercom volume helped but the open mike function is still a bit off. We find ourselves repeating what we say a couple time to get it to trigger. Maybe it's because we have been listening to each other for 30+ years and the ignore button is stuck.:) :) :) :)

I turned off my GPS audio instructions to avoid interrupting my intercom chit-chat. (Newlyweds chit-chat.) Miss Google indicates where she wants me to go on the screen; don't need her to nag me about it.

Okay, we've talked Sena, Sena, Sena.

what about the UClea AMP Pro units?

Look awesome for modulars as I have to outfit my Shoei Neotec and my wife's Schuberth C3 Pro.

Any Uclear users and their feedback?

Very informative thread. Makes me appreciate my N-com. My son asked me what I recommended for helmet comms. Since he doesnt wear Nolan, I told him to get whatever the current sena offering is.

My friend has the 20S and runs the intercom on VOX all the time so she can listen to music. What a pain... we'll be in the middle of a conversation and suddenly we're not talking anymore, and have to repeat the last two minutes or so. It jumps in and out randomly, but I can't get her to turn off the VOX, she insists it works fine.

On our SMH10 units, we tried VOX with very random, erratic, mixed results and then we went back to open mic, on all the time. Intercom is either full on, or you tap it to turn it off. Mostly we just leave it on for a running commentary on traffic, ***** car drivers, fuel level, lunch choices, and best oil to put in my bike.

I've only paired with a non-Sena intercom once. My sister saw a generic BT headset on sale at Cycle Gear and bought it for $79. I went into universal pairing and was able to pair with her. It worked ok but she wanted more features, so the next day she returned it and bought a Sena.

My biggest gripe with the SMH10, besides doing the pairing dance with multiple riders, is when a phone call comes in- the phone ringing is ALWAYS louder than any other sound that the Sena makes.. I'm talking REALLY FREAKING LOUD. Always. Turn it down this time before answering, and next time it rings, it's really loud again.

Well, I'm in the fray now. Sena20S, Zumo 550, Zumo 590LM.
  1. Audio, music, sounds like crap blue toothed to Send from 550. Horribly bad. Starcomm sounds great.
  2. Sena20s - no cloning feature? What up with dat? Get one set up, clone to another.. NOPE.
  3. It's all confusing.. iPhone connected, Pandora going, iPhone to Zumo.. Zumo to Sena.. Results? Crappy audio, better than 550 but far far short of StarCom analog, Zumo550 with Sirius XM.
Not sure how this will end. May need to follow FjRays advice and put .45 in place.
Hopefully you've figured this out by now already, Don, but the Bluetooth output from the zumo 550 is via the "Headset" profile, which is low fidelity, monaural, and duplex. No good for music. The bluetooth input to the zumo is "Handsfree" just to connect the phone to the GPS. There is no A2DP (stereo) profile supported in or out of the zumo 550.

I bought a Sena SM10 Dual Stream Bluetooth Transmitter, which I have hard wired to the stereo output from the zumo 550, as well as the mono output from my Passport Radar Detector. The output of the SM10 is A2DP, so the audio is stereo, and fairly good fidelity, but s not Duplex (bi-directional), so will not pass microphone through back to the phone.

There are two ways to work around the phone connection. If you want to keep the phone display and call screening functions on the zumo 550, go into the zumo setup / bluetooth and select the audio button at the bottom. On that screen set the zumo bluetooth audio output to "Phone only", which will keep the Navigation and Music audio on the audio output jack and the duplex phone audio will be on the Bluetooth. Then pair your headset to the zumo as a phone (headset profile) and the SM10 transmitter as a "media device" (A2DP).

The other way would be to pair the phone directly to the headset and lose the onscreen functions of going through the zumo. I think that method actually works more reliably. In either case, when you are taking a phone call all other audio (music / GPS, or Radar Detector) from the SM10, or intercom audio between headsets will all be blocked.

Thank you Fred!

Does anyone know the pin connections for the Sena 20s FM antenna? I'm frustrated to the point where I'll rig up some wire (quarter or 1/8 wavelength) to boost the Sena reception.

I quit using FM on the Sena in favor of the TuneIn Radio app on my phone. I was picking up too much electrical noise and the reception didn't seem to be that great anyway.

AFAIK, the speaker cables are the FM antenna. If you're using buds, you'll have figure out how to use the wiring, even if you're not using the speakers. 1/4 or 1/8 won't work well; you either have the wire waving in the breezes or figure how to use an external antenna. Coiling the wire won't help things.
