Ever since my trip to deal's gap, I feel so bored on all the roads around here! I still love my FJR, but it's just different riding here.
Maybe I should go to a track or something...
Definitely! Also, it's a lot more fun on a track or road course on a smaller, more nimble bike than the FJR (and a lot cheaper to repair when you rash it). Do I see an SV650 in your future? :)

Our roads in KY are pretty good too, but nothing like riding in the mountains in TN. or NC.

On the roads in the mountains, you tend to be able to see the entry and the whole turn. You know what to expect, you know if the radius of the turn increases, decreses, stays the same.... I felt comfortable dragging my pegs on a lot of the corners. Not only that but on the straight stretches, you always have mountains to look at!

Here, I worry more for some reason. I'm not really sure why??? I think it's because the turns are not as predictable, you can't see through the corners all the time, and there are more entrances to the roads. I don't seem to even come close to dragging my pegs around here, and I had never hit the feelers before my trip to NC. Maybe I should go to a track or something...
If your ever sick of the roads down there come on up to Vermont and I'll show you a couple of good ones. Maybe not quite as long as the Dragon but just as good I think. And I do want to try some WV roads next year after riding the Dragon last year.

Tom

On the weekend of the 18th to the 20th of May, come to the ESTN07 in Sparta, NC. We'll take you on a couple roads that will take your mind off Dragons and other mythical creatures. There are several FJR's already signed up riders from FL to Canada coming. Please bring Dramamine. Not quite WV but it will do.
if we're in the area, we will look for you. the fj east coast rally is in boone, nc (motorcycle playground) that weekend.

This thread has made me realize 2 things:

Definitely! Also, it's a lot more fun on a track or road course on a smaller, more nimble bike than the FJR (and a lot cheaper to repair when you rash it). Do I see an SV650 in your future? :)

1. I need a track bike

2. I need more vacation time!!!!!

What fj east coast rally is that???

I always call it 33. But your right it is 28. But it is still a fine road. 33 out of Franklin is also a blast.

hah, well, the only east coast rally that i know of.

https://www.fjrally.com/rallyinfo.html

no vendors, no speakers, no wet t-shirt contests, leave your attitudes at the door, we ride all day, search for great food, come back, make a huge bonfire, wrench, stuff like that. for some of us, it's about as close as it gets to feeling like a kid waiting for christmas. seriously. some of us plan for these rallies a year in advance. most of us book our koa rooms for the next year while we're there for that year's rally. we have fj'ers regularly attend from canada (such as former fj owner and present fjr owner pierre), chicago, vermont, texas, and this year an fj'er is flying in from austrlalia, and another from great britain, altho he's originally from the u.s., just over there for work for 3 years.

at last year's east coast fall rally we had three californians attend as well as aforementioned australian fj'er.

honestly, i'm guessing it's similar to the fjr rallies i've read up on (partially) here, likely due to the similarity of the bike style and rider style. spring rally is in boone, nc, and fall rally is in tellico plains, tn. the west coasters have tried to be cool like us and have their own rally, but we think we're the paris hilton of fj rallies. ( : we've been doing them since '00, they're great.

did my post above get edited by the admins?, as i recall having more in the post than what's showing now. i won't say what i had in, if that's the reason it was edited, and i suppose i don't mind. i just want to make sure i'm not being delusional or somehow f'ed up the post as it was intended.

I figured you just thought of it that way. For me, 33 begins at Seneca Rocks. That entire area is a blast. As stupid as it may sound, after riding that area since the late sixties, I just discovered what a fun road 219 is from Elkins to Marlinton. If I could find how to put myself into a "groundhog day" situation I would put myself in a loop riding 33, 250, and 39 cross mountain from WV to VA and back and use 220, 219, WV28 and VA42 as connectors for all eternity.

Dean, I don't know if you offended the Gods but I sure didn't see anything on that event. I have been planning on running from the 18th-20th at ESTN07 and 20th-22d to who knows where. My plans ranged from WV to N.Ga. Now I need to rethink and maybe add vacation days to the front end rather than the rear end of ESTN07. Sounds like a lot of fun. Sort of disorganized organization with fun as the goal.

dude, i absolutely GUARANTEE, you show up at the fj rally, and you will not regret it. go to www.fjrally.com and check out the videos for a taste of what it's like. we're just a bunch of mature kids. we'll probably be shooting off a potato gun for laughs, someone will bring a jug of moonshine for kicks, and we'll have a fire that can been from the space station. and that's just at night. we ride during the day, and will have separate groups labeled "touring" (taking it easy, lots of photo stops), medium, and "spirited" (lots of miles, lots of peg dragging). rarely does an fj'er wreck, but occasionally a friend of an fj'er showing up on an r1 or the like will, thinking they can keep up, thinking it's the bike, not the rider. 99% of us wear full protective gear, but rarely is it the full leathers with puck sliders looks, usually more realistic stuff ('stichs, other textile jackets and pants, intercoms). the motorcycle playground (shady valley) has a great road, and there are many others. plus, we're in boone, which is a college town, so lots of good restaurants, a walmart, home depot, etc. for hardware stuff.

if pierre is watching, perhaps he can add his two cents. i believe he headed out for our spring rally last year on his fjr, but encountered some problems, and turned back before he arrived.

dale (i think his name was dale), on an fjr, showed up at our fall rally in tellico plains by accident, i believe he was on his way to some fjr rally. he never left. ( :

sprint when you get the ground hog day thing figured out count me in for your ride plans. I could do that loop for ever. I love 219 from the bottom to the top. Have you ever ridden rt15 from rt20 to 219? Sweet road.

No, but I've heard there are a lot of good roads down around Webster Springs. I road mainly the from Wheeling to Elkins and Morgantown into Md then south into the Spruce Knob area. That's why I didn't go down 219 into Md. Most of my trips were time contrained. I either was coming out of Martins Ferry, Ohio or State College, Pa. and doing at most extended week ends. Now I'll be hitting the southern end of the state because it's at my max end of of extended week ends, BUT the FJR really extends my touring range. I hated super slabs on all my previous bikes but with the FJR I can tolerate them much better if I know I've got goodies at the end of the run. :clapping:

Also, Dean, I'm going to do some serious plan examination now. The FJ event really sounds great and I can do both a big chunk of it and the ESTN07, which I am committed to pretty easy.

The gap is a blast we have been up there twice yast year the second time we went to the gap and cherohala, the skyway we went about everywhere we could just exploring the great roads it was all great. We started out from Fulton Mississippi and rode to there can't wait to get a chance to go back this year. :yahoo:

once you decide, call the boone koa pronto to get a kabin or tent space. the boone koa is nice in that there is lots of tent space amongst our kabins. tell her (i foget her name, real sweet gal) you're with the fj group. we've been coming there yearly since '01 or so, i believe they give us a discount. if no room/kabin available, try in town, as it's a college town and they do have some decent hotels.

just do me a favor and if you happen to go on the yahoo fj list, don't mention me or that i have an fjr. it's a little secret for me for when i bring it to the rally.

perhaps you should rename the subject of your topic "spoiled by the cherohala", or spoiled by the roads in tn/nc? i suggest, as the dragon really doesn't have the entry/exit visible turns, it has blind curves; it doesn't have normal radius curves, it has decreasing radius curves; and rarely do you have a straightaway, much less one where you can see mountains.

i think maybe you're thinking about your trip _to_ deals gap, and the roads like the cherohala, 28, richard russell highway, blue ridge parkway, etc. personally, on my fjr or my fj, the dragon ain't for me. btdt, now get me to the cherohala and the other roads that have sweeeeeeeeeeping corners that if i were brave and stupid enough to look down at my speedo, i'd see 80, 90, whoa, look back up, here comes mile marker 10 (or is it 9?)... but that's just me.

( :
I'm heading to the honda hoot this year on the fjr and usually ride the blue ridge and cherahola. dragon is o.k. but the chances of getting stuck behind a cage or harley and ending up going 5 mph the whole time just aint worth it. i cant seem to find the richard russell highway (other than in georgia) using my mapping program. can you be more specific.

thanx

Got a kabin reserved for the 16th and 17th so I'll be able to hit one full day of riding. See ya there and thanks for bringing me out of ignorance, well at least on this event :D
