The mountain roads in se KY, VA and W. VA are some of the best I've ever been on....most without the traffic, LEOs and squids that clog the Dragon. With luck I'll be on some of those roads come July! DFO :)

Ever since my trip to deal's gap, I feel so bored on all the roads around here! I still love my FJR, but it's just different riding here.
Our roads in KY are pretty good too, but nothing like riding in the mountains in TN. or NC.

On the roads in the mountains, you tend to be able to see the entry and the whole turn. You know what to expect, you know if the radius of the turn increases, decreses, stays the same.... I felt comfortable dragging my pegs on a lot of the corners. Not only that but on the straight stretches, you always have mountains to look at!

Here, I worry more for some reason. I'm not really sure why??? I think it's because the turns are not as predictable, you can't see through the corners all the time, and there are more entrances to the roads. I don't seem to even come close to dragging my pegs around here, and I had never hit the feelers before my trip to NC. Maybe I should go to a track or something...

I don't get it about the "GAP"? I'm sure it's fantastic, BUT, everyone post photos and statements: ie: "I 72 year old tames Gap",

I conquered the gap!, Love the Gap, Fantastic gap" etc.

Now don't get me wrong. But we have several roads in the west. HW 12 from Lolo, Mt. to Lewistown, Id. and the Beartooth HW between Redlodge, Mt. and Cook City Mt. When you finish those roads your just glad to still be alive. And if don't make it. No one comes looking. YOUR JUST GONE! They just say, "The Beartooth got another one"

End of story!

Come give it your best shot!

+1 I listen to all this "Gap crap" and it sure looks like brain washing to me. It's an OK hunk of road, BUT like one previous poster stated you get there and far too many times you're stuck behind a slow car/truck/Harley pack or whatever. Also, I'm tired of the term "technical". It's a bunch of tight turns all bunched together, that's it. Lot's of other roads all over the planet that are as or more enjoyable than "the Gap." I AIN'T Ricky Hayden, but running the Gap in X seconds doesn't make you Hayden by a long shot. CK, I've seen a website out of California that makes me droole. I would love to run the western roads, but the ticker is running out of beats so I don't know if I'll ever make it. I sure would love to try them. We have a lot of great roads here in the East but I wouldn't get on a plane to ride the Gap. It just ain't THAT good. (by the way I'm close enough to ride it as a day trip)

Flame on dudes.

I envy those that can get to the Gap (etc.). We have plenty of twisties around here, but lots of blind turns. I can't count the time I've avoided trucks backing out of hidden driveways, vehicles from side roads, deer, people over the double line and one time almost poleaxed a big bean truck (that would look great ending up in a pile of beans). The open twisties are long sweepers, good for some speedy stuff, but not as much fun as the tighter turns. I dream of open twisties!
