GFran just gave me the info so thought I'd pass it on.

Order a Spot 2 tracker and a one year plan ($149) between now and Dec 24th -- get the Spot free. Pretty good rebate deal at www.findmespot/holidayweekend.com

Just ordered mine. A timely deal as I intended to buy one in Jan anyway.

Merry Xmas ya'll

Thanks Roger! Now I have to send this to my loved ones just in case the need has been filled? If not I'm on it.

Hey Roger,

My understanding and just to clarify, you buy the device AND the service then get a prepaid visa card in the mail later for the value of the Spot. No free lunch (or Spot) just some bucks to spend on other stuff.

Could probably buy the device online through Amazon for the typical $99.99 and save yourself a few bucks even though the rebate is for the purchase price.

Still a good deal if you were going to buy one with the tracking anyway.

When Puppychow went off the grid this summer it was nice to be able to check his link and get help for him--or would have been if he'd still needed the help by the time we got back to internet-reception range and found where he'd posted it and everything. And if he hadn't already been found by some Good Samaritans by then anyway. But a lot of folks were saying "boy, I really have to get one of those things." I don't think there's anything better yet for those kinds of situations.

Nice deal, but I just wish I had the dough back for the one I bought this summer, though.

BTW, you don't have to buy the tracking service for the extra 50 bucks, but you definitely have to get the $100 connection to use it at all.

FYI, I've a locator( (Real Time GPS Tracker) for my Android phone that works well and it was free. I'm sure Apple has a similar app. The concerned individual can find you in a snap though I reckon cell coverage is required. Haven't looked at the Spot yet to compare.

That's the big difference. Spot uses satellite communication so it works pretty much everywhere, even where there is no cell service. See the graphic here.

My wife tracks me with Google Latitude on my android phone but it's service has failed as well even staying on public paved roads. Went out for a ride with some friends and my phone lost service. Oddly enough when we came back into town it stayed stuck on "No Service" and required a reboot in order to get it to reconnect. I had it with me and didn't check it for several hours before I noticed the "No Service" and did the reboot.

Upon reboot I found some very unhappy messages from my wife who stated that my icon was moving on the map and then stopped on a curvy road out in the middle of nowhere and hadn't moved in hours and she couldn't get me on the phone and feared I'd crashed out in the middle of nowhere. That shouldn't happen with a spot, but is still possible, especially with user error.

To bad this rquires you to actually have friends or family that may worry or wonder where you are at.
Make them care. I told my wife that it was a good idea for me to have one because if the worst case scenario happened she couldn't collect my life insurance money until they found my body. She was all for it after that.

I'm resurrecting this thread to ask a question about the "REBATE" part of this ...

Has anyone who ordered the SPOT using the rebate option, either ...

1. received their rebate ..................

or

2. NOT .. received their rebate.

After 2 e-mails, 1 phone call, and an e-mail promise of an expectation of my rebate by Saturday just gone (04/20/13), I'm still awaiting the rebate ...................... and blindly hoping I get it

Anyone ??
