I was in REI yesterday and noticed the half price sign on the Gen 3 Spot Trackers (newest model). I won't say too much about the product itself; most of us are familiar with it, but it's been $149 all over since it came out, and still is, but it's half price now and through the end of July. They tell me it is effective for all REI stores nationally. No idea if ONLY REI has this price--maybe everybody does.

But if you want one, now's a good time to get it, right at the start of your summer adventures. The annual subscription fee of $100 (think it's still that) still applies, of course. I like the peace of mind of knowing I have the emergency SOS feature, and my wife feels better that I have it, way off in the sticks alone. I had an earlier model and like the Gen 3 much more. More features, more compact, and much better battery life.

*Edit: I guess you buy it and send a rebate cert to Spot and they reimburse you. Same thing, I guess, but a little more to it. On the other hand, that should mean it would apply wherever you bought the gadget.

Thanks for the heads-up Mike, I have been thinking about one of those for awhile.......

I use my spot all the time, wife really gets annoyed if I forget to turn it on. Yearly subscription is closer to $160 now.

If you have a Spot 2 and ride a lot of miles every year, the decision to upgrade to a Spot 3 is a no-brainer. The battery life alone will pay for it.

Bought a Spot 3 yesterday to replace my dying Spot 2. Just clicked on the rebate link and found this *New hardware activations only. Device upgrades do not qualify"

Oh well.

I queried REI to see if the rebate is good for online purchases as well, no answer yet.

John, follow the link I posted above, it's the spot website and you can submit a request for it no matter where it comes from, I don't think.

This is another example of business practices that piss me off. I have been a loyal Spot subscriber since 2010. They offer this to new customers that they have no relationship with and offer nothing for long time customers. I just don't understand that.

I just sent an email to Spot asking about the rebate for existing, loyal customers. Let's see what happens.

Once you start getting into some of the heart of Appalachia, there isn't squat for signal. Looks like I'm going to have to invest into a SPOT. Especially if I'm considering YFO 17.

I agree, customer loyalty used to be valued by many companies but, now being a loyal customer means they've already made their money off of you so they're off to the next wallet. I have one of the originals purchased when first introduced in 2007 and it's still going strong. Great tool, I sure wish the ill prepared hikers/riders that take off with no one aware of their travels would at least carry one. SAR teams would be doing many more rescues vs. body recoveries if more of these type of devices were in use.

Great farkle especially if you ride alone far from home.
My Gen I unit is also still running great. The battery life on the Gen I's is fantastic.
