I've gone back and forth on the self defense issue, but as far as home defense goes, it would seem to make more sense to be trained in some form of hand-to-hand combat. I've sent a fair amount of lead downrange with various pistols/rifles/shotguns/machine guns, so I'm comfortable using them in non-combative situations, but I don't like the thought of having to rely on one in the middle of the night after having been woken up. Plus, I would think it much easier to defend yourself in court for beating the crap out of an intruder than it would be for shooting him/her. As for camping out, I don't want to try to beat down a mountain lion with my fists.

Maybe it's being from Texas, but around here if someone entered your home in the middle of the night it would take some pretty strange circumstances to question your right to defend yourself.

If we didn't have young children, you'd find a 12 gauge Mossberg close at hand.

Whoops, almost hijacked thread to home defense. Sorry 'bout that.

No argument there. I'm just thinking that if there is an alternative I would rather not pay an attorney to defend my rights against a BS wrongful death civil suit. But like you said, this thread isn't about Home Defense.

As for pistols, I have plenty-o-fun with my .45. It's an Argentine Army pistol with custom wood grips. Mighty fine.

That's where the sound of my 870 being racked comes in handy. "Who in this house wants some hand-to-hand combat?" It just seems a little hard to conceal on the FJR, even with the police barrel and pistol grip.

Interesting discussion on caliber and gun types/models. I agree with most of it, especially .380 and 9mm being somewhat anemic rounds. .40S&W, .357 and 45ACP are all better choices. Gun types/models largely come down to personal choice, past experience and application.

But something that has not really been addressed is the issue of training. I would rather see a competant guy with a .22 or .380 than a relatively inexperienced shooter with a .45ACP. It's all about shot placement. One well placed shot from a .22 will out do 15 missed shots from a .40S&W. I am a BIG fan of concealed carry/self-defense, but along with that comes the responsibility of learning how to use it, well. Sort of like riding motorcycles!

Make sure you get some training from Gunsite or any number of good shooting academys around the country. Once you get schooled, then practice to keep those skills up to speed. It will make that "protection" significantly more effective. :guns:

i second that statment !

in michigan you MUST take a training course in order to have a carry permet and i think that is still not enough!

any body can drop a hammer but knowing WHEN to and the Repercussions of your actions is something you must have pounded in your brain.

dead men tell no tales and neather do dead Victems.

dont be the latter!

Mr. Mossberg watches over me at night., sitting ever ready next to the bedpost. He has several cousins and nephews around, too, for good measure.

On the sickle, I haven't carried for a long time. Used to in the car, but not any more. Perhaps I should get back in the practice? Guess I better renew my carry permit, first. Ugh. More fingerprints....

Next gun show, I'll check out the XD. Might NEED to get one!

XD's are awfully purdy guns. My personal favorite round is the .357 sig. Nice satisfying bang out that puppy.

We are fortunate to have a very large number of fine guns, calibers and ammo available to us. My preference is the XD 40 Service model, but the Sig, Glock, Kimber, CZ, Beretta, Ruger, Kahr etc. are excellent handguns.

I wish I could have one of each, and I have owned most of the brands at one time or another, but then I would likely still choose to shoot the XD. It simply is a personal prefence issue, not a 'my gun is better (or worse) than yours.'
