For the past several years, I have been traveling up to my folks’ place in Somerset (Sierra foothills area near Placerville) every Memorial Day weekend with a few folks in tow to enjoy the area. Gratefully, this past weekend would prove to be another one for the memory books and I would be returning in the wind… with one extra wheel but there nonetheless.

I waffled back and forth about riding the Spyder up… was I ready, would I have the energy, how would it be to ride, etc. And then I just said, “Self, just get on the damn thing and ride it and find out!” And so I did… leaving the Bay Area around noon, with CC & Bill along, which proved to be a good idea as we missed the majority of the traffic getting out of town for the long weekend.

It was an amazingly beautiful day… temps were a perfect cool, skies were blue, and those big fluffy clouds that you think you could jump and bounce on dotted the skies. And as it happens this time of year, the green hills have all but vanished, replaced by the golden brown of summer to come.

We made a pit stop in Plymouth to pick up a few things at the market and noticed this group across the street well into their celebration mode for the weekend!

And this window sticker couldn’t help but catch my eye… supposed to be something about an engine type… riiiiiggghhhhttt…

I found just how much you can fit in that front trunk of the Spyder… what you can’t see is my rather large emergency kit (tire plugs, inflator, first aid supplies) and two bottles of wine in additional to the beer, wine coolers, donettes, and flowers for my mum… :D

One of my favorite little spots is D’Agostini Pond along Mt. Aukum Rd./E16. Every time I have stopped there has been idyllic and stunning… this day would be no different and would afford my first “posed” shot with the new machine…

Taking our time, we finally came to the little road down the lane to my folks’ property… there is a horse ranch as you first come into the area and the meadows were green and still filled with wildflowers… summer had not quite hit here yet… kind of like a piece of the world that time forgot for a bit…

Others arrived over the next few hours and after our first meal of the weekend, it was decided to take a leisurely stroll to stretch our legs… glass of wine, check… good friends, check… attack goat for protection, check!!

Never mind… you guys walk too far for me. I’ll stay here and watch the house for ya…

886413407_fSBdo-L.jpg

The fields were still awash in lupine, poppies, and other wildflowers…

886389038_TkZtX-L-1.jpg

Dusk fell and the sky changed to a deep blue with the tree branches making stark patterns against it… I just stood there taking in that perfect moment as the crickets gently chirped their night music…

886389827_pdSqJ-L.jpg

The next day dawned and more folks arrived… as a thank you to my folks for their continued hospitality over the years, we deemed Saturday a “work” day to help around the property with weed whacking, mowing, and anything else deemed worthy of doing…

Ed gives a weed whacker lesson to the masses…

886391552_6e5Vr-L.jpg

And then set them upon the teeming mass of overgrowth…

886398578_Vj9JQ-L.jpg

Ed gets Farmer Nat up to speed on the John Deere mower… she was a mowing fool and we didn’t see much of her for the next few hours as she mowed down hip high growth all over the property…

886399372_2vCcj-L.jpg

Dana and the goat kept busy trying to read each other’s mind…

886391974_RA36y-L.jpg

And Mike came to join us for the day and tackle the back orchard, lawnmower a’mowin’…

886393189_rHVBj-L.jpg

886395295_iN5r6-L.jpg

Chia Mike!

886400733_6gniE-L.jpg

More lupine that escaped getting whacked…

886393928_9Mopb-L-1.jpg

We took a lunch break and sat on the deck engaging in a little girl talk…

886399730_G6mPc-L-1.jpg

Scott not so slyly eavesdropped… Did someone say girl talk??

886399872_r7k79-L.jpg

As more folks arrived, the front of the house looked a bit like a motorcycle nirvana… a little bit of everything for everyone!

886401659_5KPLb-L.jpg

Dorothy tries the CanAm on for size… we’ve decided that instead of wearing purple hats when we get “old”, we’ll wear CanAm Spyders instead!!

886401802_XYPYj-L.jpg

Ed needed to scoot into town to get some more ice and looked at me with eyebrows raised high and those dimples a’dimplin’… can I, can I?? Of course!!!

886402162_S8nFZ-L.jpg

Geoff was getting sunstroke so Dorothy kindly lent him her hat… doesn’t he look cute???

886402284_bMnzZ-M.jpg

Damn, my head’s hot!!

886402431_wWweo-L.jpg

Gimme back my hat, Cupcake, you’re on your own.

886403063_kcQk6-L.jpg

Ed charmed the ladies with a story…

886402590_zLCCp-L.jpg

Patrick and Stevie drove up to join us for dinner…

886402942_qjzDN-L.jpg

We traipsed out to pay homage at Indian Rock…

886403422_oUpm4-L-1.jpg

And then it was time for what everyone really comes up here for… Ed’s ribs!!

886403207_HTLMh-L.jpg

After dinner, we celebrated the May babies…

886403784_dhoWS-L.jpg

886403956_jKH7J-L-1.jpg

And then everyone headed for their respective sleeping places in preparation for the next day… it was time to ride so most of the group saddled up and headed out led by Audrey for the day’s adventure!

886404145_6W37j-L.jpg

I decided to keep things a bit simple and give myself the option of not quite so long of a ride given it was truly my first backroads ride on it… so CC hung back with me and we followed my mum and Ed to the local Starbucks for a beverage… our three sets of wheels covered all the bases… scooter, motorcycle, and tri-wheels!

886404285_Ah6Dn-L.jpg

My folks headed back for the homefront and CC and I broke off for a little adventure of our own…

Newtown Rd.

886404921_E3GUf-L-1.jpg

And one of my little known favorites, Starkes Grade… did I mention it was an awesomely most excellent beautiful day?

886405109_AiAR8-L.jpg

886405274_e9L95-L-1.jpg

This field of lupine was too good to pass up the photo opportunity…

886405721_fZcn7-L-1.jpg

We scooted into ******* Pines for a lunch break at a picnic table under the trees at the Shell station with the view of the snow capped mountains in the not too far distance. Then it was back along Sly Park Rd. and back to the ranch. Looks they the other group wore poor Erin out!

886406897_NXXLw-L-2.jpg

We had another fabulous dinner – tacos this time – and then a rousing game of Catch Phrase which I wish I could describe but it was one of those “had to be there” experiences… see if I said the word “parsley” we’d all break out in guffaws and the rest of y’all would look at us like we were nuts. Lol Monday dawned and we were treated to a sumptuious breakfast of eggs, sausage, biscuits, and fresh fruit… yum!!

886407040_BQpi6-L.jpg

And then it was time to saddle up and head back for home… but first a quick gas stop in Fairplay where Scott proved that men are useful… as dead weight (inside joke)… ;)

886407172_ZHLQK-L.jpg

Followed by a morning jaunt along Perry Creek Rd. It made my heart smile to see the ducklings in the mirros…

886407371_5PxVv-L.jpg

886407593_xigKr-L-1.jpg

The bottlebrush on E16 was in full bloom just outside of River Pines…

And as has become a custom for me as of late, a stop at the Ione cemetery (very cool and interesting place) to honor those souls who have given their all for the gift of our freedom. There was a gentleman, a veteran and VFW member, who was walking through the grave sites and making sure that every one of them, no matter what war or battle they served in at whatever time, had a flag set by it.

I greeted and thanked him for taking the time to do this "small" task and, with tears in my eyes, hugged him with gratitude for his efforts for those fallen soldiers. As I stepped away, he stood at attention and saluted... I returned in kind as best I could.

Godspeed to all those who have laid down their lives and to those who continue to do so, and the families that stand by them. Thank you.

We continued on our way and made one last stop to placate Bill’s penchant for frappucino!

Many have asked me what it’s like to ride the Spyder and since this was the first time I really got to try it out on something other than the freeway, here are a few ruminations:

1. Throttle in your hand, wind in your face, and 1000 cc’s between your legs… it’s just like a motorcycle… but different! The handling is way different… for me, it’s kind of like starting all over again. I had to remember back when I first started riding and how much “work” it was at the beginning and getting over the “death grip” on the handles. I experimented a bit with body position as, when you are going through turns, the centrifugal force pushes you away from the bike. I’ve found that by positioning my body toward the inside of the turn, it weights the bike better and is much easier to maneuver and more comfortable.

2. The stability is wonderful. It’s so great to be able to stop anywhere, anytime and not worry about toppling over.

3. Plan for a little extra time at the gas stops because there is always someone (and usually more than one) who wants to ask questions or have a sit on it (I’m gonna charge a buck for each butt… lol). It’s a bit of a curiosity in these parts so it gets a lot of attention.

4. Pulling over to take a photo is a bit more complex as a spot that would easily hold a motorcycle in it, won’t quite fit with this sucker! A bit more planning goes into those photo opp stops now.

I’m sure I’ll have more as I continue riding it but there’s your Siskel & Ebert for now!

Ain't nothing better than a Tyler RR. Thanks T - great read. Keep on keepin on. Love the poetry on words.

Nice report!.... but are you sure you want to have pics of goats on THIS board? :yahoo:

just saying...

Great report of a great weekend. Sure is beautiful in those parts! Good to see you back on the road.

We have missed your company Tyler. It's really good to see you back in the saddle.

Of all the pictures above, this one had the most impact for me. To have one's life come and go and leave this as a marker...I found myself wondering that a life filled with friends could not end up this way. This was in stark contrast to the rest of your story. Thank you for putting these up.

Keep riding safe lady.

W2

I bet there was some therapy in that.
Indeed... I had some "moments" over the weekend... while things may seem to be back to "normal", they are and they aren't... but being surrounded by loving family and friends helps the transition to new "normal" a whole lot better... B)

Thanks, Don... :)

It's actually not quite a goat... it thinks it's a dog so we'll go with doggoat... lol

Thanks, W2... means a lot coming from you! There was a whole section in that cemetery with unknown grave markers... I imagine it was so long ago and the conditions so difficult that maybe folks got lost along the way... I was glad to see that someone had the decency to give them a proper burial even if they didn't know who they were.

Great pics and report Tyler :clapping: Good to see you back on the road.
Thanks, RD... looking forward to sharing a few (s)miles with you two soon! :)

Great report. Thanks for sharing.
Btw - that goat reminds me of e-yore, the mule in Winny the pooh.
Thanks, Nik! And yeah, he is a bit of a character for sure... he even "talks" when you go too far away for his comfort... like he's telling you to get your butt back here... NOW!! lol

Seems like a very fun time - and MadMike in Shorts - that's gotta become fodder for photo chop somewhere soon!

I was also in that area on Monday riding back home when I saw a sign saying Tyler Road near Fiddletown. I had seen this before but never taken this road, but I did this past Monday - great fun!

IMG_3010.jpg

It turned out to be a great little road with good pavement half of the way and an adventure trail for the second half and drops you right onto Mt. Aukum Road just past Omo Ranch Road. A very fun stretch of 10 miles or so!

I’m just a little jealous Tyler. We had rain the whole darn weekend.

Funny, I was just thinking about sending you a PM to ask about your new hot rod and how it was treating you. Then Wahoo! A Tyler RR, just too damn cool. :fan_1:

Thanks, it made my rainy day a lot better.

Yup, I know that one well... how could I NOT ride a road that they were so kind to name after me... ;) There are a ton of little "secret" roads in that area... be happy to share a few with you the next time you think you'll be in the area! B)

Glad to help and sending sunny wishes your way for the upcoming weekend! B)

Please send a message my way the next time you are up in this part of the Sierra's and I will ride out to meet you! :)

Another great report. And great to be back in the wind I bet. I sure miss that area. My folks had a cabin in Grizzly Flats for many years and we wore out many roads and trails in the Jeeps and on the dirt bikes. Awesome area. Again good to see you back Tyler!! PM. <>< ;)
