Thinking of making a big loop, mostly on the dry side (Hwy 26 through John Day to Ontario, then through Burns to Lakeview, then near LaPine over to I-5). Would like advice if folks think the holiday traffic would make this not a good idea...

Riding is always a good idea ....and while locals will have better advice than me --the roads you mention should be relatively decent over the holiday, it's not like you'll be on tight jacked-up roads like 126, 20, 6 etc ...with all the people fighting to get to the coast and back.

**BUT, I'd be very cautious of strict and plentiful LEO presence over the holiday weekend ....Orygun fuzz love to write folks up and the ridiculously low speed limits are tough.

Looks like I'll be in Orygun over the holiday and coincidence: I was just looking at where I might go and where I might avoid.

The other thing you'll need to be careful about is to "box your corners" by getting gas receipts along the route. You're responsible for eliminating all doubt about the route you took. So get enough receipts to show the exact route you travelled.

Depending on when you do this myself or other local IBA members could act as your starting or ending witnesses. Just drop us a PM to give us a heads-up so we can plan for it.

I suspect traffic will be heavier than usual but nothing that should prevent you from completing a SS1k. It just might take 20 hours instead of 18. Be prepared for slow going on 58 through the Cascades. There will probably be lots of RVs and combined with the rest of holiday traffic, limited passing opportunities.

I just ran your route in Streets and Trips and I get 1014.5 miles. Make sure you follow LDRyder's advice a get a good receipt in Ontario. Vale's not going to cut it for a thousand miles.

So, some barriers happened last year and this never happened, but it IS NOW. Saturday, July 2nd, 2011, I'll be taking off at ~4:00am. Same planned route. If any of the local(ish) crowd want to join, I can even provide a place to sleep before and/or after.

Google maps says its 1028, but yeah, Ontario is the "corner" not Vale, for the very reason that Vale would be shy of a 1K loop.
