Starcomm manual specifies maximum input current at 1,000ma (1-amp). The tail light circuit SHOULD be able to handle that much surplus current draw. But I would fuse the connection with a fast-blow glass type fuse of no more than 2 amps. Better to kill the comm system than the light or the control relay.

Here's my Starcomm install with my Blueseas box mounted in the tail. 10 gauge wire from the battery to the Blueseas with a 30 amp relay wired in for switched power. I'm just fine tuning the Starcomm now.
