Ok, had a Zumo, and old speakers died, and I just got the FJR so why not load it up right. Well Maybe I should have let things be.

After buying an Advance unit with the mic and mus cables for the Zumo, all was working great, then I try to add a CB and things get worse.

CAB-02 for midland 75-9232 was listed on Starcoms site, but it was the wrong cable. thats tossed aside for the next owner of this device.

Got aCAB-21 well that only works when and if it's not crimped, got a replacement of those ordered hopefulyl it will be here before my week long trip south.

PTT-03 bought one, replaced and retured one because it didn't cancel VOX

Bike noice was coming through, so had to buy the power filter.

Now for some unknown reason the left helmet speaker doesn't work. ofcourse i can't test the passenger jack because I only have one helmet not two, so no power to the device.

This is nothing but a piece of shit...frigging UK people don't know crap

I've never found a solution for that VOX issue. Supposedly a "bad resistor" in the unit caused the problems, but "fixed" PTT-03s never seemd to fix the problem either. Basically, I gave up on the bike to bike radio with the Advance.

The rest of the features worked for me though.

OK, so as someone who WAS thinking of doing a Starcom to try and integrate multiple audio, and comms items, what would you all recommend?

Look at the bright side... You don't own two of the things. <_<
Some people learn slower than others, and some never do....

See above.

I dunno. I've been through 3 Starcoms and one Soft-line and have known folks with just about every other mfg except Baehr. All have issues of some sort.

At this point, I'm wonnerin' if a Dixie cup and string are not a better alternative. :dntknw:

ToeCutter:

Do you use CB or FRS/GMRS for Bike-to-bike?

The guys at Autocom said that Cb doesn't like to work well because of the power it wants to send. but when there are a few Gold Wing riders in your group and they have hte shit built-in they aren't changing to FRS

I have a Kenwood for bike-to-bike, cell or Garmin, iPod, and an Escort audio in. Give Keith a call. He would know for sure.

I think there's a way to hook up a CB, but if that's a big priority, I'd probably try a J&M unit.

My StarCom Digital works perfectly with Zumo 550, Valentine, LG bluetooth phone (receive and send), along with music from the LG phone.

My only issues were figuring out cabling. You have to pay close attention as to which cable goes in a specific port.

+1 for the Starcom.

Jeff at Bike Effects is very helpful, and my Zumo 550, RAZR,Midland B2B and Escort work as advertised.

Yes, I'm still trying to get someone to do something about the PTT-03 not disabling the VOX for the transceiver, which is what it was supposed to do. It is such a minor problem I can't believe they can not fix it. I even offered (through Jeff at Bike Effects) to do some investigation on the problem if they would just send me some schematics. I have not heard back from them.

So here's how I am working it in the meantime:

Riding solo is no problem. Just dial down the Vox and everything is good. Garmin GPS w/ bluetooth phone & Music into the Audio, GMRS radio into radio. Use PTT.

If riding two up and not needing Bike to Bike I move the GPS w/BT Phone output to the Aux port. Separate music source (iPod) into the Audio. Set the Vox level to work. No GMRS, No problem.

If riding 2 up with other bikes and wanting bike to bike, I have to go back to the first configuration. The only real problem is that I do not get muting of the music when using the intercom. The GPS still mutes the music for directions or phone calls and whenever I receive bike to bike.

My understanding is that on the Starcom1 Digital you can select or de-select the VOX function for each audio device. In other words the VOX can be set to not key the GMRS transmitter when you talk. Having the VOX key a bike to bike transmitter is a stupid feature anyway. Why on earth they decided to design it that way is beyond me.

Starcom Advance is certainly not perfect. The cable costs and difficulty in purchasing exactly the right cable for bike2bike are a definite PITA.

But IMHO, everything out there has its "issues". You have to decide which "issues" you can/cannot live with.

Jeff at BikeEffects.com is the best place to start your decision process. Support of a product is what makes it or breaks it, not the design.

That's true, but they kinda screwed the pooch with the adjustment settings. All you have is "high", "low", or "off settings. There's not enough variability to dial the system in, IMHO. The "high" setting doesn't go far enough for my setup, so I have to put up with the music cutting out at random intervals above 75 mph, or turn off the mute function. Seems kinda silly to me that they have 10 settings for the mute time (1 to 10 secs), but only high low or off for the VOX level -> bass ackwards.

I've been pretty happy with the Starcom Advance except for that freakin' PTT design screwup. Alot of good new ideas in the Starcom Digital, just implemented poorly...IMHO.
