I brought my bike into the dealer today because of hot starting issues. I already suspect its likely the starter from talking with people here. I bought a starter on ebay awhile back inanticipation of needing it. I think that it'd be a good idea to have it bench tested before having it installed. My question: do I take it to a reputable rebuilder to have it tested or would it be as simple as taking it to auto zone to have it tested? Guidance would be appreciated.

Tia, Heidi

I had mine taken to a rebuilder last year after it was cleaned up. They checked it out and I was good to go. My hot start problem on my 04 was more battery then starter. YMMV

Considering the effort to replace a starter, I would not rely on bench test results for a used part. I would want someone to at least give it a once over with cleaning and replace any marginal parts.

Me too. I'd hate to replace it and 6 months later have to do it over again.

I have done a number of FJR starters and haven't seen one with bad brushes. The big problem is being a sealed unit there is no place for crap to go so it builds up to the point that the unit starts to drag. Every one I've done just gets cleaned, armature refinished and undercut , lubed assembled and tested.

Thanks folks! I think that I'll wait for a positive diagnosis & I'll go ahead & have it checked out thoroughly. I happen to have a place that rebuilds starters across the street from work.
