Steering stem nut

I was just wondering if it is possible to drill and tap out the steering stem nut to put a ram ball on it. Any help would be great.
Can't see any problem with drilling it but you may have problem tapping it  There's only 2mm of metal thickness there. You may want to plan having a back-up nut underneath

Don

Don speaks near truth. The OEM stem nut is too thin for that application. There's also not enough space under it.

I asked the Techmount folks to drill and tap one of their stem nuts for me.

I've done it. As statd above the material is fairly thin aluminum, so there are only a couple of threads engaged. I backed it up with a locknut (on the back side of the stem nut). Even with more thread engaged, it could still vibrate loose and should have a locknut to keep it from rotating. It's also very easy to strip the threads since it's soft aluminum.

I'm also looking to mount my Droid 3 in the same location, so I measured the distance between the stem and the nut on my '06 yesterday...0.100" That's all the room you'd have to install a locknut and still have the stem nut bottom out on the tree like it should. I called MotorcycleLarry and they're currently out of stock (they manufacture them), but I was told to expect some in a couple of weeks.

I saw an 08 FJR for sale at Bert's Megamall that had a 1" ball and stem welded to the stock nut. Looked like ****, but it seemed effective.

IMNSHO, the WynPro Ram-Bone is way mo' better than a threaded stem nut.
Ok, I scanned the link for a picture of what you're talking about, and couldn't find one. Can you post a link or a picture?...
The first post in the linked thread has two pictures of the Ram-Bone, one showing the 'Bone and the other showing it installed on a FJR. If you don't see the pictures it's you :p and not missing pictures.

Click the link, then when you get to the thread, try clicking the F5 button on your keyboard to refresh the page and see if it loads the pixs.

I've just fitted a RAM ball to mine. If you remove the small Yamaha logo near the ignition lock there's a nice little spot face there with a centre drill hole in the middle. I drilled it through (about 5-6mm) and tapped a M6 thread. Job done. It also has the advantage of putting the GPS a bit further forward for better visibility.

Ah ok, it's probably because I'm at work and they pretty much block all pictures from image hosting websites. I'll check it out when I get home, thanks.

Excellent info. Thanks!
