Hoping someone has some insight in to this issue.

I left work a little early today to get in a ride since snow will be on the ground anytime now. I stopped to get gas and could smell something like faintly burnt popcorn or burnt leafs coming from the right exhaust pipe and the left pipe smelled like the normal exhaust, there was nothing on or touching the pipe at all went for a 2 hour ride and still had the same scent. Made a stop, left the bike running and got off to check and the same smell was coming from the right only.

Not sure if it is anything to be concerned about? Probably putting the bike into storage in the next week or two.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Could you post that smell so we can check it out?

On the other hand, the exhaust co-mingles at the cat so both exhaust pipes should smell the same unless your FJR has an aftermarket exhaust.

When the exhaust system gets wet it often smells strange as it burns off the water. Cow Hampshire got a lot of rain last night and today, did your bike get wet?

Alan-ionbeam you forgot to mention SkooterG may have put some of his boogers on nhlakeriders FJR exhaust, those do smell terrible when they burn off! JSNS!

Could you be smelling a very hot brake disc and pads? That would emanate from the right side. Is your brake pedal sticking? Or caliper?

How long has the bike been sitting - is it possible some forest creature is using the right muffler for food storage?

^^^ agree with ionbeam, wet FJR exhaust has a special 'eau de funk' as it heats and dries.

Thanks for the reply's. The bike didn't get wet, a few small splash ups but not a lot of moisture for the aroma to last for any length of time, checked for any out of the ordinary boogers, nothing. I originally was leaning towards brake pads sticking but I'm going with the mouse condo theory. I had a bunch of bird seed in one of my boots which i had worn only a few days prior while I was out on the mighty dr 650. My wife feeds the birds ( squirrels, chipmunks etc ) so all the furry critters kind of like it around here, and the cat is in full retirement. I guess I will look into trying to vacuum out the exhaust tomorrow.

I will let you know if the elusive scent is gone after the procedure.

Thanks again for your reply's.

I hear pot smells like burning leaves

Perhaps you forgot where you left your stash

Hey, you might check your boot heel for heat marks. I'll get a funny smell if I'm riding on my toes and accidently rest my heel on the pipe. It might not come off on the pipe.

I'm wondering if a small creature like a field mouse or mole somehow made its way up your right tailpipe - a nice warm place to be this time of year - just a few minutes after your last ride.

The seed is a clue. I suggest a sustained 100-plus mph run in the boonies, 20 minutes ought to get the culprits to well done, then to ash.

Hey Don, tell nhlakerider to stop sniffing his pipes!

Yo Vic, I think that Bluestreek - Steve has the correct answer! Easy sometimes, to forget where you hid your la Mota ese! This is the Fine FJR Forum majicmaker, We Don't Ask and We Don't Tell on anyone sniffing their pipes! JSNS, Free Will eh!

Wouldn't that itch?

Yes perhaps, but any live animal testing of the theory would be conducted by an enthusiastic volunteer from the ranks of the nearest artillery unit.
