The Garauld Givi 357 mount mod is fantastic. I can't imagine a more robust option for carrying real gear
Alrighty, thanks for that . . . are you talking about his modified GIVI supersized rack, or the subframe stiffener?

GX
Not the sub frame stiffener... while i think it's excellent, if you can live without stock grab bars, the Givi combo is exceptional.

@someguy:

Thanks for the follow up . . . I'll have to give it some thought, the GIVI rack option isn't too much larger . . . but for the two up riding the grab bars may be helpful . . . . Have to think about it . . . .

Latest update:

Pulled the trigger on the Gary rack . . . and, while looking for options for headlight protector . . . lots of little projectile rocks laying about on the highways in SoCal . . . went to Cee Bailey site and remembered that someone here mentioned them as an option for windscreen . . . went for the combo discount on a 4+ x 4+ . . . standard contour with headlight protectors . . . . Should be out in a week on the windscreen . . . this mornings early AM ride already the "touch of Fall" is in the air here . . . .

Thanks for the posts here . . .

Update:

The new CeeBailey +4 x +4 standard contour shield got a good test on Sunday, seems very good, substantially quieter than the stock item . . . and at low position flows enough air to keep things cool in PCH traffic, and higher up kept my head from bobbling around as with the stocker . . . and the plastic looks very beefy, very manly . . . should be fine for as long as I have the bike.

Semi-patiently waiting for my Gary rack . . . .

I've got the Cee Bailey windscreen, the Gary rack is bolted up, electric vest pigtail installed, throttle lock, etc . . . ready for an over-nighter up through Ojai to the 166 and over to Pismo Beach for the night . . . coming up. But so far haven't gotten too much feedback on tankbags that are FJR friendly . . . I've seen a couple threads on the Yamaha tankbag . . . mostly on the negative . . . and a few comments that it is "OK" . . . . Any further insights on tankbags? Seems like the handlebars are closer to the tank than would be "comfortable" for my old Eclipse . . . clip on type . . . is magnetic the "best" option?

GX

have had both clip and magnetic...

hate clip. there is no benefit unless you have a non metal tank.

go with magnets, keep the back side clean of dust and keep your tank clean and it will always work well.

(the options are nearly limitless, but i use the rapid transit 19 and love it... its my second one and i will certainly buy another when this one finally needs replacing)

Great!! Thanks for the pointer on the Rapid Transit 19 . . . looks good, price seems reasonable . . . I'll check into it; much appreciated.

And, every time you fuel up, you rub the tank with the underside of the bag on the paint. Inevitably it will eventually scratch, however careful you are.

I've been using magnetic bags until recently, I always stick some cheap, poor-quality duct tape on the tank top to protect it (cheap comes off easily after a trip ;) ).

I've now got a "proper" Yamaha FJT bag (free). I'm sticking tape under its bra, because even that will fret away with minor movement.

@mcatrophy:

Thanks for the tip . . . there will be a tank cover at some point, but I haven't exactly been one to worry about appearance . . . shiney stuff can attract unwanted attention here in the land of flash and glitterati . . . .
