I just replaced the stock rear shock on my Gen I and holy cow what a difference! It is certainly not just an imagined improvement either. I rode up to the twisties today and this is where I really noticed the improvement. It feels much more planted in the turns and stable through a turn. There is no unsettling when you accelerate or decelerate before or during a turn. I know several forum members have said suspension is the best upgrade. I was always a little skeptical about it until now.

I replaced it with an Ohlins YA052 which is the "cheap" one and doesn't have the remote reservoir or remote damping adjustments, still it is a vast improvement over the stock shock. Now I will start researching what I can do to the front!

Ride on!

I did the same with mine. I tracked down a wilburs with a fresh rebuild... and noticed the difference immediately.

Prepare to be more impressed when you add upgraded forks to the mix! At a minimum, get fresh fluid and add stiffer springs to balance out the improved shock.

Good luck and enjoy your "new" bike!

So, how many miles were on that stock 2004 shock?

Might explain (part of) why that new, after-market shock feels oh so much better.

Kind'a like when you just put a new tire on and the bike feels 1000% better...
