I'm heading out on Saturday with some pals to ultimately end up in North Cal riding through the Redwoods. Our first day has us riding from Seattle to Hood River Oregon through Randle and east of Mt St Helens. I am wondering about FS roads 30, 28 and 88 down to Trout Lake. These roads don't open until the snow melts, but this year has been a very light on the snow accumulation. Has anyone ridden these roads this year? How about in the past? What are they like?

Grazi!

Well I would stick with FS 25. The paved roads from Randle to Trout Lake are full of pot holes unsuitable for a FJR. Don't ask me how I know!

From Randle to FR99 on FR25 is rough, smoother after that. At Swift Res. get on FR90 and follow that till it turn north and then follow FR23 to Troutlake. I did this May 14, after the Day Before Ride to Windy Ridge. I would take in FR99 to Windy Ridge too. That road is in pretty good condition if you avoid the sagging road and few rocks. Take it easy and enjoy it.
