This has certainly cleared up my questions.
I had no idea that the '06 had a different TB cam profile!
Also looked into the TB return spring mod but after comparing the return tension to my other bikes, it doesn't seem to be out of line.
Perhaps the PO did the spring mod .
While the G2 tube sounds like the perfect solution, I couldn't resist the attempt to modify the existing tube and save the $80+ it costs here in Canada.

At this time of year I have time on my hands and $80 saved is $80 for fuel
It just seems that even after dropping $8k on a great bike, there is always more ways to keep spending...and spending...and spending...
And then there is this sub frame issue to look at.
It seems like a terrific bike but I can't shake the nagging doubt that, after owning an ST1100 for 8 years, I should have gone for the ST1300.
I'll give it this season and see how I feel about it at the end.
