Test rode a BMW R1200R and K1200R this past weekend. I know after this that I'm not interested in the R1200R.

But the K1200R is a really nice bike. Once thing that really stuck me was how SMOOTH the throttle was - no on/off "jerk" like on the FJR.

I'm really disappointed now with my AE's throttle response even with my PCIII. There's no reason why Yamaha couldn't make it as smooth as the BMW - which is also subject to the Euro standards.

However, it's tough to get a 2008 model; BMW has too many 2007s left over.

Oh well. Still have the AE for now. :)

G2 Throttle tube worked wonders for the way mine feels

I also had throttle issues at first with my AE, but as Nick mentioned, the G2 throttle tube combined with a throttle body sync, resolved the issues and now it's silky smooth. I haven't even considered a PC!!! as I don't feel throttle response could be any better.

You might want to consider these inexpensive mods before shelling out all that money (and the associated higher service costs) on the BMW.

I just bought the g2 to install when i do the valve inspection. I have also looked at the r1200r and have recently started looking at the k1200r. DO you know what the differences in maintenances costs are between the 2 beemers? I also heard the k models were also buzzy.

During my 20 minute test ride I couldn't feel any buzz. However, I was still in shock with how smooth the throttle felt and how "light" it felt.

I have read that anywhere between 5-6k rpms it can be buzzy. But 6th gear on the freeway (approx. 70-75mph) will put you in around 4k and there's no buzz.

Are the maintenance needs on the k more/less than the r and what of drive shaft failures, if you know? thanks

Haven't really read any drive shaft failures.

Regarding the general cost to maintain a K vs. a R, I do not know that either.

When I take my FJR for major service, it's $300-500 each. I wouldn't call that cheap.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful but the cost of ownership is something I don't think about, it is what it is, and if I like the bike it doesn't matter to me. :D

I had a 08 sportster-06 FJR- and 02 R1150RT BMW at the same time-the beemer has 74,000 miles has been completely trouble free and fits me better than the FJR. It does not have the brutal power or eye pleasing appearance the FJR has but has excellent smooth and even power without the abrupt on off power delivery the FJR has. Handling is on par with FJR and the BMW does not feel top heavy. The brakes are the same or slightly better(?) on the beemer as they are power assist. The beemer is smoother at speed does not put my hand to sleep and has all day riding comfort as delivered without doing a bunch of mods or add ons. The beemer is high quality construction with attention to detail such as hard paint thats nearly impossibe to scratch and many other little things that all contribute to the overall machine. That being said the FJR was (is) one of my favorite bikes and will purchase another one when a model change comes along with a few changes. The Harley is well a Harley. Its not made to compete against the sport touring bikes. Its kind of like riding a mule or a quarter horse, completely different animals for a different purpose and you know that before you mount up.
