One of my friends from work bought an Archos 605 (4GB flash memory) and Travel Adapter (~$250 for both of them) to record from his 1st generation Chase Cam. He used to use a Sony camcorder to record from the bullet camera but it was unwieldy and since it was mounted in the sidecase of his G1800 he couldn't start/stop video recording while he was riding. Also, the pain of transferring from tape to the computer - even with firewire - made it a real nuisance. The final straw was when he mounted the camcorder on his handle bars (RAM camera mount) and the tripod/camera mount hole in the camcorder broke off dumping the camera in his lap.

Recently I showed him the Archos 605 was capable of recording video straight onto a memory card. The video out of the Archos is 640 x 480 30 fps DivX encoded AVI. The Archos also supports 16 GB SDHC cards so it will hold a lot of video (somewhere around 20 hours). Here's a video of us riding back to the office from lunch - the video loses a lot of quality posted to YouTube but I do think it serves as an example of what the Archos is capable of. It's not an interesting video - just posted as an example since I haven't seen anything posted here that was captured from an Archos.

So for ~$465 dollars you too can have an easy to use video camera system for your bike - there'll soon be one on mine:

Camera: Adrenaline Camera - $210

Personal Media Device: Archos 605 4GB flash - $200

Adapter to get video and microphone input to the Archos: Travel Adapter - $55

Oh, and as a bonus the Archos also makes a capable MP3 player for listening to the tunes on the go.

This looks like a compact, slick system.

Sorry for the bonehead question, but: How would one play video/audio from this to a TV?

Thanks,

Bill

There are a couple of ways. You could buy the Archos DVR Station which allows you to play video straight from the Archos to your TV. But the best way, and the way my friend is going to do it, is to take the AVI file that the Archos produces and use software to burn it to a DVD. Then you can just play in on any TV that has a DVD player hooked up.
