Congrats on the new gig, Jason!

Man you're gonna have one helluva Iron Butt ride for the next Tech Day...

I'd consider the North Dallas area. Lived in Carrollton for several years, although that's been built up considerably since then. One community you might consider would be Flower Mound. Half way between Dallas and Denton. I believe that would keep it within 40 mi.

Both of those would result in up to a 2 hour commute to (some parts of) Arlington due to increases in traffic and the abundance of construction (not scheduled to be done in most areas until at least 2014 to 2015). It would have you going though the thick of the metromess traffic twice a day.

Yep. While nice areas to live, they aren't fun drives to where you gotta go.

Ok now that we've established the guy is leaving.. He stopped by today to say for sure, I think we of the Michigan contingent should bode him a proper farewell.

I think part of what influenced his decision was the fact he refuses to live under Kanadian rule.. Damn those interlopers last month!!

We have three weeks before he's gone So lets get something started.

Am I gonna get spanked for starting another thread aboot this?

I agree with you both, the north side does look like it has some nice places to live but there is know way I could deal with the traffic and commute. I've been looking mainly at everything south of 183. I'm going to look at some of the places close to the plant but I have a feeling I'm going to end up farther south, like Mansfield, Burleson, somewhere in that out laying area. My wife has a friend that lives in Kennedale, when we come down this weekend they are going to show us around and help us with what they can.

Thanks Andy...

Its just a days ride, not to bad. I would though like to make my reservation now for Tech Day VII, the couch is pretty comfy in the garage.

How is traveling on hwy 20 from west of Fort Worth? Looks like some nice areas out that way.

Are you talking about commuting into town? Through town into the mid-cities or southern-mid-areas or into Dallas? Morning commutes would be into the sun as would evening ones. Stay S of the Ft. Worth and Dallas loops and it's better than going through (so 20 is skimming as far north as I'd want to mess with).

If you mean other than commuting, it puts you close to Possum Kingdom Lake and points south... all of which head toward FM4 south toward Hico for pie. Along the way hunt down some of the roads in the Chalk Mountain area: 6336 and the squiggly white roads).

I was just wondering how bad the traffic was on 20 going in and out of town and if was south enough to avoid the ratt race.

20 isn't bad but it depends on where you are. In Arlington it'll likely be the worst. It won't be as bad as some of the more central highways though.

Just two weeks ago I had to run from the Galleria area to Cedar Hill after work for a craigslist purchase meet up. Man that suuuuuucked. Run from the north central area of town to the southern end of town near Arlington. Yuck.

Well I made it back from Texas and after scouting out the area my new home is going to be Mansfield. It seemed to be the easiest commute to and from work that got me out of the city into what seems like a nice neighborhood. I looked around Arlington and Fort Worth, visited towns such as Waxahachie, Venus and Burleson, drove up to Grape Vein, Flower Mound and Lewisville. There are some nice area's to the north but with traffic its just to long of a commute. So Dolce Living of Mansfield is it, in about 3 weeks I'll be moving down to get settled in and start my new job.

Look forward to living in Texas, everyone seemed very friendly and made me feel welcomed. The only thing that really caught me off guard was the traffic, I was warned but had know idea. The metroplex is a very large and populated area to say the least and it is still growing. I never seen overpasses stacked that high before, that was something.

Thanks everyone that gave me advice and encouragement, it was appreciated.

Yep, and we are a very spread out city, especially with respect to some of the Northern cities. It was a culture shock to me moving back after being gone 13 months just how much space there was between some of the highways and the buildings. LOTS of traffic despite LOTS of lanes and layers. Still, it's not L.A.

One thing that's nice is you got lots of lanes everywhere. Three lanes each way on most of the primary surface streets. Back in Florida that's about as big as the highways and interstates get. It's definitely more well thought out, especially if you've lived somewhere else that wasn't.

Congrats on your new gig and post, read some nice advise from those North Texas folks. Been here in South Texas since 97, was born here but not raised here. The only thing I can tell you is to remember the words from the Texas Tourism Board......"Texas, It's a whole other country"

You'll adapt. It could be worse. It could be LA where the traffic's bad and so are the people.
Apparently you've never spent a Friday afternoon on the 405 crawling at 2.3 mph watching the beautiful bright red sunset (fueled by valley smog) over the Malibu Hills, as you listen to "99 Tears" on the radio for the 3rd time in the last 4 miles. Just when you think the world's coming to an end, the sun sets over the western hills, you feel that cool Pacific on shore breeze and you realize.............."It's good to be in L.A."

Not to mention a night when the moon is full, the Santa Ana Winds blowing in from the East, hot and dry with the smell of Sage strong in the air.... brother, life doesn't get any more exciting............perfect night to ride the canyons.

Yes I have. I've also seen the cost of living, the tax burden, the blondes chittering amongst themselves as the gas stations, and the effort of the few to impose their wills on the many.

I stand by my observations.

But that's a thread jack - and a political rant - so I'll warn myself publicly about it.
