I used to live in Rome, NY and right after they passed that law the police were still making and taking phone calls while driving their police cruisers. I wish we could give them a ticket. Its kind of hypocritical of them expecting to get people to stop calling and texting when they don't do it themselves. I know it was like a $100 fine for anyone caught on the phone in NY so it is cheaper to buy a bluetooth set up. The problem is that you still have to take your eyes off the road to dial some phones. Not all phones can handle voice dialing yet.
Next time you get a chance take a look inside a modern police cruiser... two or three computers/laptops, keypads, radios, cell phone, radar, blinkys....... there's a lot of stuff going on. Methinks they are exempt, and hopefully have more training than the average bear. Despite that, they don't seem to be involved in a whole lot of accidents. They are catching the bad guys just not all of them. Let's not be too hard on them, they're on our side.

I will always think of Patriot when I see this phrase -- In aviation they refer to this as cockpit overload. I've seen some cases of cockpit overload when the operator was using high heels and talking to a friend as they walk down the street ;) Someone will probably be along to punish me for this sexist statement in spite of the winkie and laugh.

On the streets texting while driving is distracted driving, inattentive driving is a Bad Thing. What is going on in the cruiser could be more on the lines of cockpit overload and distracted driving.
