I think the big difference is that in this one your cinematography told a story.
Special effects and great scenery are cool and all, but conveying a story is more entertaining in the long run.

I agree with the story thought. Even in mainstream movies. Especially the latest Indian Jones, I was talking to myself (or at Steven Spielberg) while watching it. It was like they

had to throw the latest special effect in every five minutes. Just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean you have to. The story is always the most important thing.
