Tomorrow will be a day trip with 3 buddies on very familiar roads. We'll do about 400 miles and find something good to eat along the way. I've done this day trip more times than I can count.

But the weather will be amazing. The sun will be shining early and the Vitamin D will magically run through us like some kind of electrical current. The air will be cool all day and very crisp. I'm sure nearly everyone will be glued to High School Football State Championships, College Football Conference Championships, Duck Hunting, Deer Hunting, Christmas Shopping, or whatever else tickles their fancy. Hopefully, the back country roads will be left all alone for us to enjoy and play with our toys.

After 6 years and getting close to 100,000 miles, the anticipation is still very exciting to me. I've been looking forward to this all week.

Stay thirsty, my friends.

My thoughts on motorcycling and a few other pleasures life gives us:

Motorcycles:

If that rumble when you thumb the starter, that pull when you twist the throttle, that feeling of defying gravity when it seems like the asphalt is getting too close to your elbow, if those things do not excite you, you need to find another hobby. Or another motorcycle.

Boats:

If the smell of two stroke oil burning over the water, the feel of the bow pointing skyward when you advance the throttle(s), the drone of the engine(s) as the hull climbs the face of the next wave, the sight of the rooster tail as the trim gets set just right, if those things do not excite you, you need to find another hobby.

Pistols:

If the grips against your hand are not a comfort, if the click of the safety or the hammer, if the sights coming back on target from recoil, if those things do not excite you, you need to find another hobby.

Wives:

If the way she smiles, the way she walks, the feel of her hand in yours, if those things do not excite you... Well, I cannot help you.

To summarize, these are all things that we have dealt with over and over to the point where the repetition should have turned to boredom. Yet, these things that we love to do, these things that are a part of our identities, these things do not get old and boring. They get better and better as we get better at dealing with them.

Why should you not be excited to ride the same 400 miles again? As a child I rode my little Honda MR50 for hours, every chance I got. And all those hours of riding took place on just over an acre of land.

Enjoy your ride tomorrow. I will be thinking about you guys. When I wake up.

Enjoy. I still get the same thrill of anticipation the night before every ride too.

Our bayou brothers are poets. I grok. Tonight in our remote "primitive" cabin, a good Scotch ale, maybe later a Goslings Black Seal with ginger beer and lime, tomorrow a little road trip up to Chick's at Alder to watch the Montana Griz face off with the ND State Bison in round two of the FCS... Ah, but no riding; too much ice yet, though temps may see 40. Still, the potential for a sublime weekend...

By the way, "Eagle's Rest" is available to FJRtista traveling though SW Montana. If you've been camping, this will be luxurious. If you been staying at the Hilton, it is primitive - no running or hot water, no shower, but a chemical holding tank toilet, propane wall lamps, heater and range/ oven, completely outfitted. Book in advance...voluntary donations accepted (taxes went over $1,300 this year). Quarter mile of Jefferson river frontage, decent fishing, 13-foot raft/rowing frame/ kayak available, etc.

Have fun out there exploring your world as you twist your wrist, lean into that bending road and smell life.
