I was removing the D inner panel on my fairing and there is a "quick fastener" that has to be removed.

Has anyone come up with a way of removing one of these plastic quick fasteners that doesnt damage the panel it fastens or damage the plastic fastener itself??

There are two different types, and I'm not sure which you are referring to. Either should be able to come out without damage, they are made to be reusable.

The first type has a phillips screw head, and you loosen it 1/4 turn then pull out the whole fastener.

The second type has just a little round pin in the middle, and put push the pin in another ~1/8", then pull out the whole fastener. While it's out, push the pin back out the other direction, so when you re-install the fastener you just push the pin down flush again.

The Quick Fasteners on the inner panels have the plain pin in the center. I wish that the manual would have told me that the inner pin has to be depressed to remove. The shop and owners maunal leave a lot to be desired. For example-- the owner manual says that all of the inner panels have to be removed to remove panel D--and that isnt true!!!

Thanks!!

Yep - go to your dealer and stock up on those babies - those and the "hex's" have a way of disappearing on ya'.

To directly answer the 'removal' question itself (once the pin has been pushed, or screw turned 1/4), I only use my finger nails to remove them, but some require prior gymnastics experience. I was about to use a screwdriver on some when swapping my panels, but found a way to dislodge them without one (pushing from behind, a fingernail at opposite sides, etc).

By the way, there're TWO different lenghts of those pins, so watch out. Never seen so many different damn fasteners used in a motorcycle before. The good news is hard to use the wrong one, but still have to be careful, especially the first few times. Take care.

You want to come over to my place and help me turn the FJR upside down and shake it.

Sneezed and knocked one into the black hole. Yes, I have a stock of extras, but I get confused easily.

Did I put one everywhere? I use a muffin pan to lay out the fasteners by panel sections.

I hate all those plastic fasteners! My car has some too. I always end up trashing about half of the ones I remove.

Has anyone researched any replacement fasteners that might be any better? If so, please speak up.

Otherwise, I may have to measure and see what McMaster-Carr has.
