Talk like this pushes my buttons; BC Ferries gouges motorcycles at a 2:1 rate. And they load us up in the corners where square cages won't fit, diagonally to the lanes. I sometimes think that if I have to pay 50% of the car rate I should get 50% of a car lane. And I like the argument about charging by weight.
Good luck in your fight.

I too am subjected to paying BC Ferries f#*%ed rates and with several recent surcharges added. It sounds like your ferries are more sensibly priced. Good luck with keeping them that way.
Yeah, 'fuel surcharge', 'port charge', increased weekend fare, where will it all end? Arrrgghhh, don't get me going...Build a F***#*# bridge!
Then it would be a toll bridge, and bikes would pay the same as cars anyway.
Then don't be surprised when it happens.... .....

Hey FJRay, I was curious, someone told me that you lived on San Juan Island for 30 years. Are you glad you left? :)

I am glad I left but not because of the Island itself. When I moved there in the mid seventys it was a small drinking town with a fishing problem and now it is just a tacky tourist trap where a simple working guy can't afford to live. There are a lot of other reasons but the cost of living and the ferry system were the two biggest reasons.

no intent to disparage your life choices. sorry 'bout that.

which reminds me of another thread. you don't plat golf, so you?

Those damned ferries!
There's nothing wrong with our state ferries, it's those "damned" Washington state department of transportation officials that should be shipped off to Texas.
As a Washington taxpayer I'm happy those officials are doing their job. They are following the law and making users pay at least 60% of the fees of the service you and I use. And I was more than happy to pay the $21 to Friday Harbor and back on my FJR a few weeks ago.

No way, no how 5 bikes were fitting in the space of 1 car. Trying to park them sideways in the lane would have not been possible....nor would have the other bikers remotely considered it if told to.

Of course it would be a toll bridge, how else could the government tax us for going across? Seeing as it's BC, I wouldn't be surprised if the government wouldn't make it a 'private' crown corporation, so they could tax the corporation and add a tax to the toll. Sigh, such is life. But at least with a bridge I'd be able to cross when I want to cross, limited only by the weather and not the ferry schedule.

And bikes wouldn't necessarily pay the same as cars; the toll on the Coquihalla highway for bikes is half that for cars.

Lots of bridges and toll roads in the East charge by the number of axles. Bikes pay the same as cars.
