The FJR can't cruise

I've found with a PCIII and the right map, you can cruise down low without the surging and such. However, running super low is definitly not what the bike was really designed for. So while I can cruise smoothly, I have to be a tad carefull of my throttle inputs or I'll accidently goose the bike a bit.

I currently run two maps on the bike. I have a nice custom map for commuting gas mailage (also does well down low), and then I have my power map for weekend twisties.

I have some harley friends too. They are my friends and that does not have nayting to do with what they ride. I find riding in a group is very slow no matter what you are one as a group. 40+ - bike, of any type, would have a problem keeping a spirited pace just to stay together as a group.

My choice of riding is by myself, or one other bike of similiar type and skill. Groups can be fun, but they are not fast ( unless you are following some of those cali boys :p )

When on a benefit run with thirty some bikes, mostly HD's. Stopped at a bar. Figure I'll just have one brewski. Six stops later I am half kicked in the ***. Decided to go home. Don't know how many stops were left, but that's what they do. Drink ride drink..................................

SNIPIt is meant to do things quickly. Accelerate, brake, snick-shift, etc. The put-put-putting along that is required of the cruiser set is just not possible on the feej without all kinds of throttle snatch transitions and clunky transmission action.

I guess I need new friends.

You'd think all that quick starting and stopping would work great for the FJR when hanging with the H-D/cruiser crowd:

start quick and stop for a smoke,

start quick and stop for gas,

start quick and stop for lunch,

start quick and stop for bench-racing & other BS,

start quick and stop for DQ,

start quick and stop to put on rain-gear,

start quick and stop to take off rain gear,

start quick and stop to feed dog riding on H-D,

start quick and stop at H-D shop for new T-shirt,

start quick and stop for night 'cause it's dark,

ride, rinse, repeat

Dennis

(ok, I admit it, my H-D is still in the garage but the new FJR is right beside it!) :yahoo:

Keep your friends. If they are happy with what they are riding and you are happy with what you are riding, just make adjustments; maybe you just need to drop down one gear (and let the feejer sing a little).
I couldn't agree more. Why, some of my best friends are Harley riders. But the snobbery many of them display is puzzling. Those who believe themselves superior are really annoying to those of us that are.

A quote from the 1930's - "Harley Davidson made of tin, ride'em out and walk'em in"A quote from an illustrious member of this forum -"98% of all HD's are still on the road, the other 2% made it home."
That little poem is so funny! It was a surprise to see it posted. The only time I ran across it was while restoring a '48 Indian Chief Bonneville 80. I pulled out the seat, and taped under it was a yellow piece of paper which had this little ditty on it. I'll never forget it.

And I'm still cleaning the coffee off my monitor from that little 98% joke. My experience as a Harley owner in the 70's confirms "Between jest and joke lie many a truth". :)

Or none at all. I generally ride alone. More freedom to do what you want, when you want, for as long as you want.
Well said...thats always the advantage of doing things alone...I kinda like it!

And thats a big plus for riding I think, the bike, you, and the road...perfect. Although sometimes its nice to share some scenery and stories with someone.

Having never ridden a Harley I guess I'll never understand how those folks get enjoyment from those lumbering, ugly, slow examples of 1930's technology. And their snobbery... sheesh! Most of 'em are just poseurs anyways!

Good advertising/marketing and a willing public.. But this HD rider is about to be converted (where's the holy water?).

Don't worry, brun. Once you break that sucker in, she'll cruise along very nicely. ;)
I'm just turning over 35,000 kilometers on my 06, most days 40% urban traffic 60% state limit (100Kms/H), and I'm STILL waiting for the day slow traffic riding gets smooth !! Dealer and his henchman (The Mech) are not really interested. They keep telling me "It just wants to go fast". Changing dealership for servicing has not helped. After spending as much as we did on our FJRs we should be able to do any speed we want to without feeling like the machiine's in charge instead of it's owner.I know I could go out and spend more money and time and eventually get some help (Power Commander etc. ) but why should I need to? If anyone has an answer or an idea that won't cost me next months salary I'd be very greatful.

I noticed one advantage when I ride with my Harley buddies -- I actually get to see some scenery and notice where I have been. :exhappysmiley:
