Just took my bike out of the crate -- the double "torqued" nuts come adjusted (right or wrong). However the top crown "nut" is in a bag and has to be installed. It is aluminun and takes a giganic wrench to torque as it damages easily. I don't know if it changes the torque of the two lock nuts or not but it certainly could. Since the problem is not apparent when first ridden, I would think that the only fix would be to start over and re-torque all again. C.R.

Yeah. That's the Steering Stem Nut. Ya need a Hugh Jass socket for torquing it down to 85 ft. lbs. The socket is one size for up to 2003 models (32mm) and a larger size for 2004 and forward (36mm). The ID of the nut is the same, as is the torque spec, for all years. It holds the Upper Bracket (and handle bars) in place but shouldn't affect the pressure placed on the bearings by the upper and lower ring (castle) nuts.
