You may have seen this referenced before. Maybe it's time to actually read it (other folk too).

OK... I traded for a 2012 last year. Had a '09 Road King I bought to flip, but the market for used hogs has tanked...
Love this bike. Didn't have it very long last year. Getting ready to awaken it this year BUT...

I just saw the swing arm maintenance on youtube. I'm not rich. I do my own work. That "procedure" is beyond what I am willing to try, at age 69.

Is that really necessary? What happens if you don't do it?

If it is necessary, does anybody want a really good running 2012, blue, with about 22K on it?

Any help appreciated...?
Swing arm isn't technically hard. Just take your time and it's all cake. I don't know what videos you've been watching but one source I used to look at made things consistently harder than they needed to be.

This link at the bottom of that page tries to install software. Firefox stopped it. LOOK OUT !!!

The problem happens when the site is referencing another site! (Can't control that!)

I never had trouble with Mark's website before but I never went looking at all of his links either.

Should be safe to look at the site as long as you don't try to access that specific link.

I saw where the link to BFY for the VW axle nut socket went to a blank page, so removed that (thanks for that).

If this is happening, then I suspect that destination site has been compromised. It was a quick fix to remove the link.

Meanwhile, if anyone sees things that no longer work (it is the Internet and things change over time) then feel free to PM me with your targeted findings and I'll fix those too.

Obviously, the site has been hacked. Time to change passwords.

The link has been removed :)

Clarification: My site was NOT hacked. There was a link to another site for a 36mm socket. Over time, that site "went away" (that stuff happens all the time). That domain was acquired by someone who is a "bad actor".

There was no need for me to change passwords or do more than I already to do protect the fjr-tips.org site. Once the "dead" link was reported, it was a quick fix to remove it. I thought that might have been the case when the first post about it (above) happened.

It's like if there was a link here to my site. It's not here that would need to make a change, but my site. The Interwebs are exactly that; a web of references to other places. A problem at a referenced place isn't a problem at the referencing place but the referencing place needs to update their reference. We can't do that if we don't know it's happened.

I encourage everyone to directly contact web site owners when finding this stuff. I'm pretty sure others will appreciate it like I do.

Again, thanks for letting me know.

If you'd like assistance, and could make it, there's a Tech Day over in OH. Give them some notice and I bet you'd get more help than you want - haha

Details HERE

Otherwise, I've had great success with youtube vids, the links/pages Bounce provides. I strongly encourage a read-thru/viewing PRIOR TO starting on the work. Ask me how I know :)

It seems I have become the villan in this scenario. I didn't let "you" know because I didn't know who "you" were. How could this be personal, when I had no idea who ran the site?

I posted an alert so that nobody would become infected with a virus, trojan or whatever.

My advice to all is to create a new user on your computer - one that does not have the authority to install software. Before using the web, log in as that user. That will go a long way toward avoiding things like this.

His site wasn't hacked! He had a link for a tool that went to another site. That site was taken over by the Evil Empire. Happens frequently as businesses go under, move on or the owners don't pay the bill for their domain. I fail to see what could be done to prevent this short of examining all the links you used on a regular basis. I have linked to hundreds of websites on posts to various forums. If one of those links, perhaps to a vendor, became malevolent, would this mean I had been hacked. Or might it mean that fjrfourum.com was infected? Nothing but a link that went bad sometime after creating it.

Anyway, you did point it out and it got fixed.

This thread has drifted from its original point, increasingly littered with sketchy IT advice by the OP, wasn't titled very well to begin with, and generally outlived its usefulness.

Closing.

The Management.

To be clear, I never (EVER) meant to infer that EGL was a villain. Re-reading my posts, I don't think I did. Perhaps a little embarrassment was involved but that wasn't meant either. Lots of people drive cars and use the internet without understanding the mechanics of the process.

I did try to explain how he misunderstood the nature of how the internet and hyperlinks work. I have gone out of my way to go into detail to explain the process in PM to help him in the future.
