Yeah, no kidding. I was out at Roseville Yammy today picking up my bike (new suspension. Can't wait, but it was raining like crazy today, strangely enough). I was about ready to leave when I saw all the staff gathered around a newly uncrated (not even completely uncrated) new bike, and all acting pretty giddy. So I went over to see what the buzz was about. And they really were giddy. It's the new RM-1, and the first one any of them had ever seen.

So why so excited? Well, its honest-to-god $30K price tag, for one thing. It's already sold. Yamaha doesn't let a dealership even order one till the down payment's in from the customer. Can't give you much detail, but there's a lot going on with its electronics, for one thing. Like some kind of lean-sensing technology, and the onboard GPS does . . . I don't know what. I think it can sense when you're hungry and order a pizza at the next place along your route. Probably drives itself too, like a Google Car. Hey, I'm not a technical guy, and I was dumbstruck by the price tag. But all the parts, service, and sales guys out at Roseville were acting like a bunch of girls at a Justin Bieber concert..

Sexy, though, with its nifty brushed aluminum finish. Sorry if the pic's blurry. Could barely figure out how to get a pic over here from my iphone (I told you I wasn't technical). Thirty thousand BUCKS?

Little bit of "market value adjustment" on that one, considering MSRP is considerably below that!

The R1M is quite stunning in the flesh...

Amazing electronics. What makes this bike stand apart is that the software works with everything extremely well. Even has slide control for spinning up the rear wheel in the corners. MotoGP for the street. And only $30K. Wow. Good on Mamma Yamaha.

It's cool, but unless I'm racing for money, what the Hell would I do with one? The guys that can ride this bike to its potential are already part of Yamaha's race team.

$30k would be a great down payment on a new F250 though.

If you want one you have to fill out an application to buy one and all the 2015 R1M's are already spoken for. Basically they are all going to various privateer racing teams around the world. If you have a racing licence Yamaha is taking applications to purchase a 2016 R1M though. This is what I was told by my local dealer when he was showing me the electronic package on the regular R1 for 2015 that they had on the floor.

I think I posted this up earlier but here is some info on the bike from the Yamaha UK site...

Poor Kawasaki. They put so much $$ into marketing their H2R ($50K.. https://www.kawasaki.com/Products/2015-Ninja-H2R )

It was supposed to be the next 'big thing', then yamaha sneaks in with the new R1 and R1-M and from what i've read, now that they've been released and tested, the Kawi is a bit of a letdown and the R1 is a leap forward over everything. Kudos to BMW for forcing bike makers to get off the open class status quo. The S1000RR raised the bar so now the response is finally coming.

Still cheaper than the Ducatti Panigale R at $33,995

Cycleworld had a write up on the new traction control with the gps-cool stuff for the track. Amazing what can be bought from the mfgrs. these days.

I dunno what the story is Bill. If I would have had the checkbook with me [or db's ca$h] I could have bought the R1M in the pics right off the showroom floor.

I think your local dealer is smoking something. The R1Ms in the US aren't being gobbled up by various privateer racing teams around the world. In fact, the Graves Yamaha team (the Factory Yamaha team in the US) uses the regular R1s because of the MotoAmerica rule limitations. I'm sure there are some privateers that are buying them to race, but, there are plenty of street guys buying them (I know of a non-racer guy that bought 2 - 1 to sit beside his other highly-collectible Yamahas and the other to modify heavily).

Also, the 200hp is quite a stretch. If anything, that's at the crank. RWHP is around 165-175 depending on the dyno and a reflash of the ECU gets you approx 14 more HP.

There are quite a few of them available across the country and, as previously stated, MSRP is $21,990.

Don't feel too bad for Kawasaki. The initial run of the 300 rwhp H2Rs sold out and they opened up a 2nd ordering period. I'd be interested in reading the reviews where it says the Kawi is a letdown as I simply haven't seen anything that hints at that.
