I thought they (the cars) looked really good. I confess to always liking the '70s era TransAm. I don't think I would be willing to pay for someone to "convert" a new Camaro into a TransAm though. I would rather keep the Camaro and the warranty.

The newer American sporty cars are quite capable of holding their own in the handling department now. Modern suspension and brakes have made it to Detroit.

But, none of that automobile stuff impressed me like the "magic girl conversion". I wonder if they could do some of that magic with Mrs. Redfish? Of course, she could never fit her fat behind in a car that small, it would have to be something like a dump truck...

But it would be worth a bunch of money to "convert" her into something attractive.

Looks like a modified COPA Camaro to me.
Yup. Their web site says they take piece of crap Chevy Camaros and turn them into piece of crap Pontiac Firebird look alikes. No GM branch has made a car worth the **** for the last 35 years. Pontiac was the worst of them all. Shutting them down was a mercy killing.

And NOW, some aftermarket company is gonna try to pull off a conversion? Have you ever bought a conversion van? They're riddled with problems...Just like these will be.
Damn Zilla try to be a little pessimistic next time!!

yeeeaaa..................."Chick Car"
It aint a Miata!

I had a 1984 Berlinetta (305) "back in the day". It was a fun car, with the digital dash etc. but it was a measly 175 HP in a heavy car that started to fall apart and turn to junk at 80k.
Fast in a straight line is what the US automakers USED to be about.
Fixed it for you.

Actually the 70's 80's Trans Am with the WS6 performance suspension package handled real well.

Today's American muscle cars handle great!

I had a '67 400 ragtop...now that was speedy...
You mean a '69?

First year for the Firebird/Trans Am was '69.
Actually, it was a '68....and not a Trans Am this one

Ah ok, 68 Firebird Convertible, nice color.

Have you considered a wood chipper?

Have you driven a Mustang lately?

They handle so good I really don't think it matters that much.

On a track yeah, but for the street? Not so much.

Killing you? You should see the damage this relationship is doing to me!

I should probably show that video to Mrs. Redfish with a few well timed comments on the size of the car, the beauty of the ladies... Nothing like the power of suggestion you know.

I do like the look of that T/A though. T/A being the TransAm of course. I cannot imagine the $$$ it would cost to buy and maintain one though.

I'm wondering what "today's muscle cars'" improved handling is compared to...
The new Camaro SS I drove a few years ago handled very nice. Almost no body roll, no harshness. But it was sort of numb and liked to understeer and didn't like transitions (probably due to the weight). I suppose the "fast" way around a corner on this thing is with the rear hanging out and $100 worth of tires going up in smoke.

I got to test drive a 1993 Camaro Z28 and my friend has a 1997 Camaro RS, the new Camaro handles much better than either of those. Much more predictable. Much better than my 1984 Berlinetta with fresh shock abosrbers, which was more comfy than sporty. And at the bottom of the heap was my 1989 Mustang GT. Nice light car with a lively little 302, but what a rattle-bucket peice of crap that was. Extremely sensitive to the drives I put on it.

But none of these, even the new SS, can hold a candle to my 2001 Honda Prelude when it comes to handling. It's down 250 hp from the SS but that's ok. I can't speak to racetrack handling, but for around town this wins hands down.

so the quickest way around a corner [for it] is the slowest way around a corner? oooooookay.

didn't like transitions
and there's the rub.

If it's got a live rear axle it's riding the short bus.

Personally I never liked the modern Camaro. The exterior is way too big and the interior is not nearly as roomy as it should be for a car that big on the outside. It barely resembles the Camaro of 1967 or 1968 that it shares a name with. The Trans-AM is just a modern Camaro with a few cosmetic changes and probably a much higher price tag. Meh.

Modern cars out of Detroit have much better brakes than they did in the last century, and handling is also better on some models. The problem is that the competition has not been standing still waiting for Detroit to catch up, and Detroit has not caught up.

To compare apple to apple, my wife's Highlander handles and brakes a lot better than my Suburban. So much so that I drive a lot slower in the Suburban than the Highlander even though they have similar power to weight numbers.

And I have never driven an American car that can handle or brake like my Mazda MX5, though the new Corvette may be close.

Is that sorta like the fastest way to stop a motorcycle is to "Lay er down?"

SOB, can't break out of the quote!

flip the little "switch" icon in the top left of the edit screen. it will switch to the code so you can see the closing [/ quote] that you can move your text past.

Re: SoCalFJR1300's video link

270 hp in a car of that weight. LOL

Oddly, that's the only way I post, and it works 99% of the time. Sometimes however, it goes and jacks with my post after I push the button. I moved the slash quote tag three times and it kept putting it back. Grrrr.

So I was lucky enough to drive one of the pre-production Camaros. 406hp. I really enjoyed it. Would I buy one? No. Would I buy any sports car? No.

FYI... All production 5th generation Camaros are produced in Oshawa Ontario Canada.
