I have to chime in on the helmet, too. My first crash was face-first, and I can still speak clearly and chew my own food because I was wearing full-face lid.

Update..

We are both in full face helmets The guy that helped me find the right one did the same for my wife when I brought her down.

I have yet to use my car this weekend (side bags rock for errand running) I even delivered a small plant in one of them.

Returned the head gear when I brought back her ¾ helmet after looking around I thought this set was a bit over priced.

I have a couple hundred miles on her now and today is the day I plan to ride all day. I hope they can get me in for my 600 mile service early this week

Hey congrats on the new bike. I wanted to buy from Mom's but thought they ran out of FJRs; turns out it was a mistake when they told me. I worked with the sales guy "Dennis" and he wasn't too happy -- nor was I. I've been looking at their 2010 Silver for Rent and wanted to buy it; I've bought a few bikes from them and they're cool to work with esp. free delivery, etc. I ended up buying at a Yamaha dealer in Hudson -- never been there but it was ok. I'll have services (that require a dealer) at Mom's anyway.

So they lowered front, rear, and kickstand for you? I'm 5'6" and thought about the lowering but didn't want to mess with it.

Anyway, I'm on a 2010 and hope to see you on the road. I commute Rt 3 daily.

Actually, for all of you southern NH guys, I would highly recommend Hudson Cycles for any repair work. I have had positive experience with them fixing up my '05 after a too close encounter with a bambi in Dunbarton, and ionbeam had them do his extensive engine repairs after a CCT failure.

I do not know anything one way or the other about Moms' service department.

Actually the two dealers are somewhat related as the owner of Hudson cycles has a brother who works for Mom's. I think another brother is/was involved with the Triumph shop in Nashua.

Funny thing is when I picked up the bike it had a Hudson dealers sticker on it.

I’m 5-9ish and can flat foot at stops. Did the Heli triple clap farkle last week. Now looking at new seats and windshields.

I know that some of the seating options can get you about an inch lower if you need it.

And yes that rental bike is what drew me to the FJR. It just sits there dwarfing the other bikes. (maybe not the gold wings) but I already have a car.

I have a helmet where the front face lifts up and love it got it from helmet city in Florida. Oh ditch the communication gear and if the wife keeps poking you down shift then throttle hard and don't look back...enjoy the ride

you'll hear people reporting about them all the time. they're most often called "modular" or "flip face" helmets.

On seats, remember that "lowing" through seat mods means LESS padding and typically fewer miles before your behind starts complaining.

I sold my FJ and still miss it. I would not mind getting another one with low miles on it. Mine had around a 140,000 miles on it and needed a rebuild of the carbs and top end.

Thanks all for the comments on Hudson Cycles. I was wondering about their reputation. I'm not crazy about the location but it's almost kinda on the way to work/home so they have that going for them. Lately (due to riding season), MOM's service appts. are about 3-4 weeks out. I wanted to use MOM's since it was familiar but maybe I'll try Hudson Cycles (I got my bike there anyway).

re: windshields, ... I ordered a Laminar Lip (still in box and not opened) and Vstream (on the bike as of last night) and the Vstream is a big improvement over the OEM shield. I'm 5'6", 30" inseam, seat at lowest setting. With the Vstream, I can now sit up straight and not have a wind roar as I had on the OEM shield.

At my height, I thought the OEM shield was pretty good and quiet if you slouch down about 4" and stay centered -- but that gets tiring.

Also, with the cold/dense air recently (in the upper 50s F) and my rain jacket, there's a lot of wind on the arms/shoulders causing my rain jacket to flap a lot using the OEM shield.

With the Vstream, that all but goes away. I hear the Laminar lip with the OEM shield is good esp. in hot weather but I'm really debating on just returning it. Today was nice at about 75F and I can get wind in my face with the Vstream down a little bit. I can also lower the Vstream so I can see over it and still get clear/non-turbulent air on the top of my helmet. We'll see how the Vstream performs in the hotter weather once we get back into the 80s around here.

I don't know about you, but when it gets into the 90's I like to have more than just my head in the fresh breeze. That's when the OEM shield and something to tip it back even further (spacers or tuning block) comes in handy.

I had a V-stream (1st gen) for a while and it was just too damn big, and I'm 8" taller than you. You must be looking through the shield when it is all the way up. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but if I was looking through a windshield, it might as well be a car. JMHO.

Just ordered a +3/+4 from sergeant (light gray tint) to help me when I’m 2 up on the highway.

Wife says the wind buffeting back there is hard to take. So I hope it helps.

I am very happy that the FJR shield can be raised and lowered. I agree I do need some nice fresh air on me when the weather is hot.

I may be swapping them back and forth depending on the weather- riding plans ect.

I have a windshield that's cut way down. At this time of the year, it provides the most cooloing breeze and has no buffeting. It's also quieter than the stock or the Large Calsci. I'll be putting it on in the next 24 hours and you're welcome to take a look at it.

I hear ya. Today was 80s and will get hotter this afternoon -- luckily I brought my mesh riding jacket. Last night I started looking into mounting that laminar lip on the OEM shield.

Looking through the screen is ok (esp. if it's raining or there's junk that can smack you in the face -- e.g., falling acorns or tree debris on the backroads) but I prefer to look over it and lower the screen to make that happen.

I really want to try the Laminar lip but that's days away because you have to mount it and then wait 24 hours -- hopefully, I can do it tonight. Luckily windshield swap is easy.

Sorry folks -- I didn't want to turn this thread into another windshield thread. I'm glad to hear windshield comparisons accompanied by height/inseam measurements. I hope the OP gets good info on windshield alternatives as it is very apparent that an aftermarket windshield is a necessary mod on the FJR.

I believe Dan means Rt 93 Exit 10 which is just barely in Hooksett, many would see this exit as North Manchester.

Maybe after CFR we can find a time/place for a NH get-together. There is a group of old timers that eat 'n ride fairly often and now there seems to be a new wave of FJR owners that need to be assimilated
