My son's birthday is on the 6th of April and he has always wanted to visit Texas. So we will be going to Texas Motor Speedway, Dallas/ Ft Worth for the NASCAR race on the 6th and then heading south to COTA, Austin for the MotoGP on the 12th/13th. Any advice on places to visit between would be gratefully received.

OFF TEXAS THINGS TOPIC: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/topic/150808-tuscany-by-scooter-in-2014-with-edelweiss-couples-tour/page-1 I want to make sure that You and teerex51 - Stefano S. know that we will be in Italy from late September to mid October, if you can ride down to see us!

I will send an email to you with our Itinerary and where we are staying at in Venice and Rome, not certain yet about our lodgings in Florence.

Hi Don

That was quick. We'll be hiring a car so wouldn't want to let the side down but it would be great meeting up with you all again at some point. Phil and I will discuss our plans fully tomorrow and then hopefully getting approval for vacation time Monday so hopefully by this time next week we'll be able to plan time for BBq and beer. I'll bring my Kermit chair with me.

As much as I would like to join you in Italy most of my riding this year is based around IBA rte's throughout Europe and preparing for rallies. The main one being the IBA European tour in early September so it is unlkely that I'll be unable to meet up in midweek although Venice is always worth the visitand is tempting. was planning to spend three relaxing days there at the end of May after the Brit Butt Rally but Texas beckons instead.

Let's see, there's BBQ.

Yep, that about sums it up.

Just kidding. Kind of. Eat your fill while you are here.

What kinds of things are you interested in? There's always Six Flags theme park.

San Antonio isn't far from Austin so you could go down there and hit the usual historical sites. Spend an evening at the RiverWalk.

You could make the trek over to Houston and catch up on the Johnson Space Center as well.

How many days do you have for sight seeing? Trying to think of things that would be good for someone from out of the country to see.

Lockhart and all it has to offer! Which is world class BBQ, and an easy way into COTA from the southern route. Coming in from Austin will be a nightmare if it's anything like last year. We'll be riding down from Newer Mexico through the hill country, staying in Lockhart and "visiting 6th street" and other locals in the area while there

We're are still very much in the planning stage at the moment. Probably arriving at DFW on Sat 5th and possibly going to the NASCAR at TMS on the 6th as that is Philip's birthday. I saw Six Flags on the map and although he'll be turning 30 I'm not sure he's outgrown theme parks so possibly there on the Monday, so there's three days to fill. Having been to the KSC in Florida maybe Houston and then across to San Antonio, which would work quite well. I'm not sure that traffic from Austin would be any different than 100,000 trying to get into Brands Hatch for World Superbike in Foggy's heyday, or F1 at Silverstone, and it would be good to catch up with Beemerdons again but Lockhart sounds interesting as well. Lots of research still to do but thanks for the help. Pity that we'll not have longer, then it would be worth hiring bikes.

If only Texas were bigger. It is such a small state.

Texas has a pretty rich history and Texans tend to embrace that. My best advice is to use Google to choose those things that might appeal to you. Since you are not riding motorcycles, much of the appeal of The Hill Country is lost. Certainly San Antonio will offer a variety of interesting a different historical monuments. Remember the Alamo? Honestly just driving around the area and seeing a land so different from the UK should be pretty interesting in its own right.

If you go through the Amarillo panhandle area plant some trees, they need em BAD!!!
Can't grow. The wind will uproot them and blow them over.

Speaking of Amarillo, there is at least one worthwhile attraction there. The Big Texan Steakhouse is in Amarillo Texas and is easy to find. Right alongside the Interstate, painted bright yellow. They will give you a free 72 ounce steak if you can eat it and all the sides in less than 60 minutes. It is a tourist attraction of sorts and the regular steaks are surprisingly good.

Since you will be in Ft. Worth, check out the stockyards. It is where the cattle drives used to end. They have an old steam train to ride. I think there is a rodeo in the coliseum there every night - that would be different. Ft. Worth has impressive art museums for city of its size, if you are into the fine arts.

Good Lord! Quit talking about Amarillo! He could drive clear across Europe in the time it would take to get to Amarillo.

Do you ever grow out of amusement parks? Bad news though, scratch that one off the list. I grew up in Florida so the idea that large amusement parks close down for part of the year still doesn't register in my brain, however, Six Flags does in fact have an off season. At the time it looks like you are coming they are running limited schedule and only open on the weekend.

I wasn't trying to talk you out of Austin by any means, just trying to warn you. I'm sure there is worse traffic then I described. I just don't like riding/sitting in it myself. Lockhart is also a lot less expensive that weekend, and then there is Blacks BBQ, Coopers. Kruetze (I didn't spell that right) and Smitty's market. Last year after the race on Sunday, part of team Yamaha, and Team Ducati were there, we had a pretty good time with them. Sounds like you got everything under control for race week in Tejas. Oh Yea, I forgot the Salt Lick too. As you see my hobbies are motorcycles and BBQ, I love going down there.

This was all done at short notice. I only asked Phil if he wanted to celebrate his bithday in Texas on Saturday.

We've had to revert to plan B. Phil can only get 4 days vacation so we are taking advantage of British Airways new direct flight to Austin. Arriving Thurs pm and heading straight to San Antonio for a days sight seeing. We'll miss the first day of practise but having travelled so far we want to get some feel for Texas. NWRoadRunner, I didn't take it that way, just that living and working in the environs of London, sitting in traffic for 2 1/2 hours to go 30 miles is not unusual. Not sure we will stay on Fri thru Sun but if I see a FJR I may leave my card on it.

Thanks everyone for the advice, hopefully I'll be able to spend more time in the Lone Star State, and New Mexico, in 2015 on my return to Florida after a 50CC.

See you at COTA

I know some feel that other places are better, but this place is pretty much tops, and you can't beat the visuals and smells of an open pit BBQ inside the restaurant.

From my last trip there.
