Pressing on
Another true story from the flowing river of stupid things that come from my mouth:
My nephew and I took a trip to NC a couple weeks ago. He's still new to street riding so I am frequently giving advice on things my wife and I have learned on our journeys.
I have accepted the good advice from this forum and have radically changed my riding gear since getting the FJR, but in honesty I still practice ATGMATT (all the gear, most all the time). When we are on a trip, I like to change out of my boots and riding pants and wear my hiking tennis shoes and jeans to dinner from the hotel instead of full gear.
Brannon and I stayed at the Cherohala Mountain Trails Campground cabins/huts before we got into Tellico. I didn't realize we were 5 miles on twisty 39 from Tellico Plains when we went to dinner or I probably would have worn the riding pants. It got dark before we got done eating which made it even more risky.
We pull into the Cherohala Market for gas, which is usually packed with motorcycles and has always been a fun place to me. It wasn't packed, but there were several bikes there. I was thinking about the ride back and my decision about the riding pants so I wanted to express caution to him. He had his helmet on getting gas so I had to say this very loudly for him to hear me...
"Hey Brannon, we're going to have to be careful in the dark without our pants on tonight."
It took a few seconds to realize what I said, and then I added "on the road... on the road is what I was meaning." Maybe I won't be recognized if I only come back on the Goldwing from now on....
