If you want to ride I would not use a base. I would ride the south west corner of Colorado and stay a different place each night. Best ride I have ever had were there. Take a look at a map and pick a loop that goes over grand mesa, through the east side of the Black Canyon and maybe down as far as Silverton. Back track to Teluride then out west back to GJ.
