So - what exactly is the purpose of TWO GPS units? Are they to tell him where the left and right side of his bike are so he can park it easier?
How the hell can he see the road with this mess sitting in front of him?
Looks like crap to me. Just my opinion.

The person who owns the bike does a number of LD events if I understand the previous posts. If that is the case a number of the LD competitiors run at least two GPS' for redundancy in case one fails. The loss of GPS with only one mounted in these events would put the rider out of the event so it would seem a fairly practical move to have the second GPS as backup. Also I believe it is fairly common practise in these events to have one GPS tuned into the weather radar.
That would make one GPS for the route, one for backup and a third to monitor weather. That would be my guess for what it is worth.
Often one does user-entered routes while the other does auto-routed calculations for ETAs to individual bonus locations and checkpoints.

For what it is worth.... I use 3 GP's on my FJR for LD rallying only. My main unit (Garmin 2820)is routed to the next bonus location. The secondary unit (zumo 550) is either routed to the next bonus location or the checkpoint to give me an ETA. It is also the backup unit in the event the main fails (yes it has happened to me on 2 separate occasions). The secondary unit is also used to vary the route to determine "what if" analysis. The 3rd unit is an older unit (GPS V) which I use to permanently display all my critical riding stats as average speed, countdown timer etc.
Note that my daily rider only has one GPS, which as most would suspect is more than adequate for the majority of riding. In a competitive LD rally environment, the 2nd or third GPS makes sense to me.

We have often seen 3 GPS on the rally bikes and a occasional coin dispenser.
